The payoff (already in text)
Ch. 1 (Romance Dawn): Adult Shanks dives into the water to save young Luffy from the Lord of the Coast sea king. The cost is his left arm.
Why this matters
The “Shanks loses his arm” moment in Ch.1 was previously read as a one-off heroic sacrifice setup. Ch.19 retroactively reframes it as a character signature: Shanks does this. He has always done this. The drowning-DF-user save is his recurring move. This is also one of the cleanest cases in the series of the prequel-flashback being inside the main timeline — Oda inserts the Shanks-rescuing-Buggy beat as Ch.19 specifically to harden the Ch.1 sacrifice as a pattern, not an event.
Cross-link Shanks Figarland Connection — the Shanks as steward read benefits from this: the steward role requires being someone whose default response to a sinking friend with a Devil Fruit is dive in. The hat is in safe hands precisely because Shanks’s reflexes are wired this way.
