Roger - name encodes Jolly Roger pirate-flag-as-King-of-Pirates

The seed

The given name Roger is the literal pirate-flag name — the Jolly Roger (first attested in Charles Johnson’s A General History of the Pyrates, 1724) is the universal symbol of piracy. Etymological theories: either Old Roger (English slang for the Devil / Death) or French joli rouge (‘pretty red’, the blood-red privateer flag). Either way, Roger = the pirate flag.

The captain who launches the Great Pirate Era is therefore literally named after the symbol every pirate must fly to be one. He is the embodied-symbol-as-man — the human Jolly Roger. The naming logic is type ↔ token: the founder of an era carries the name of the era’s emblem.

Why this matters

This is Oda’s embodied-symbol-as-name + WG-distortion-as-erasure double-encoding playbook — the Ch. 1 prototype for all later D.-character naming. The technique:

1. Give the founder a name that IS the universal symbol of the thing he founds (Roger = Jolly Roger; the type of his token).
2. Embed the lineage-tell (‘D.’) in the middle, structurally redactable by external distortion.
3. Have the WG publicly distort the name (Gol D. → Gold) to scrub the lineage from civilian awareness, while the original name persists in pirate / Marine / Revolutionary inner-circles.
4. Use the distortion itself as the foreshadowing of what the WG is hiding.

Generalization: every D.-character in One Piece carries some form of WG-distortion of their name in public records (Luffy’s bounty posters, etc.). The distortion is the foreshadowing of the lineage. When a One Piece character has two competing public-name renderings, test for lineage-erasure-as-WG-tell. The Roger/Gold/Gol-D. case is the Ch. 1 prototype.
