Summary
Picking up directly from Chapter 1’s cliffhanger, 17-year-old Luffy is swallowed by the whirlpool but survives by sealing himself in his barrel-boat (“Too bad I can’t swim, too” — page 2). The barrel washes ashore on an uncharted island that is the secret hideout of Iron Mace Alvida, captain of the Alvida Pirates. Three of Alvida’s pirates find the barrel, plan to drink the rum they think is inside, and instead get knocked flat when Luffy explodes out yelling “That was a great nap!!!” In the forest, Luffy meets Koby — Alvida’s terrified cabin boy who boarded her ship by accident two years ago while fishing and has been her toilet-scrubbing slave since. Koby confesses his real dream: to join the Navy. Luffy declares he will become King of the Pirates and shames Koby into resolving to chase his own dream. Alvida tracks them by Luffy’s laughter, demands Koby answer who is “the fairest throughout all the seas,” and Luffy — uncomprehending the danger — calls her “the ugliest old hag of all!!!” Alvida swings her iron mace; Luffy no-sells it (“That didn’t hurt! ‘Cause I’m made of rubber!”) and launches the series’s first named attack — Gum-Gum Pistol — sending her flying off the island. Luffy orders the crew to give Koby a dinghy; they sail off together toward the Navy base where the infamous bounty hunter Roronoa Zolo is imprisoned, with Luffy declaring he wants Zolo for his crew “if he’s a good guy.” Closing caption: “And so the two young adventurers sail on towards the naval base and… destiny!”

- The Gum-Gum Tree myth — Koby asks if Luffy “ate the fruit of the Gum-Gum Tree” (page 23). First in-world folk-explanation of Devil Fruit origin. The fact that it’s wrong (DFs don’t grow on species-named trees) is itself a seed for Nature of Devil Fruits.
