Why it matters
This is the first instance of a pattern that recurs against every later major Devil-Fruit antagonist:
- Crocodile (Alabasta) — Luffy realises water/blood is the weakness by trying things and watching the response.
- Enel (Skypiea) — Luffy realises rubber is electricity-immune by being struck and not getting hurt.
- Lucci (Enies Lobby) — Luffy realises Lucci’s Zoan form has limits by sustained engagement, not by being told.
- Hody Jones, Doflamingo, Cracker, Kaido — the same empirical-fighter posture every time.
Luffy doesn’t ask — he tries, and the chapter teaches him. The trait is first on-page in Ch 20 — the Buggy fight is the origin instance of the pattern.
Technique stack
