Zeff Lost Leg Mystery

The seed
Ch. 55 page 14 —
handicap-read explicitly rejected
Zeff’s wind-blast kick is performed with the peg-leg as the standing leg . ‘EVEN WITH ONE LEG, THAT WAS NOTHIN’.’ The leg-loss is empirically not a combat handicap — the eventual leg-loss reveal is reserved for a moral payoff (Sanji backstory), not a combat payoff. The Ch. 55 demonstration pre-rules-out the handicap reading.
Why this matters
The lost leg is a visible question — every time Zeff is on-page the empty pant-leg/peg is a panel-level reminder of an unresolved backstory beat. The prop-tell is Oda’s standard visible-mystery-tracker — once the prop is shown, the reader is on the lookout for the story behind it.
Predicted payoff: the Zeff-Sanji backstory chapter (Ch. 56-58 estimated) — the lost leg is the bond between Sanji and Zeff. The leg-loss is almost certainly Zeff’s sacrifice for Sanji (this is a deeply-popular East Blue inference; flag for verification at payoff).
Ch. 58 page 14 — Zeff ate his own leg
“YOUR OWN FOOT!!? YOU ATE IT!!?” / “That’s right.” Mechanism: self-amputation and self-cannibalism on a starvation-rock to extend rations . The popular-prediction (Zeff fed his leg to Sanji) is inverted in the specific (Zeff ate his own leg so the remaining food could all go to Sanji) but correct in the spirit (the sacrifice was for Sanji’s life). The leg went to Zeff’s own stomach, not Sanji’s plate. The reveal is more extreme than the prediction.
Ch. 57 pages 3, 16-17 —
the leg-loss is structurally pre-loaded (food-cut split + physical separation)
Page 3: Zeff appears with two legs intact in his pirate-captain era — establishing the pre-leg-loss baseline. Pages 16-17: the chapter’s compositional setup for the leg-loss reveal — Zeff splits the salvaged food into two sacks (small for Sanji, large for himself), turns his face away while handing Sanji the small sack (“Here’s your cut. WUMP…!!” with face angled), then orders Sanji to “the other side of that rock” so Sanji cannot see him . The visible-asymmetry-of-rations is the chapter’s structural lie ; the Ch. 58 reveal will invert it: Zeff’s sack is empty, he is starving so Sanji can eat, eventually eats his own leg to survive. The chapter’s compositional grammar is the prop-tell for the inverted-reveal. The Ch. 47-48 peg-leg seeds are here structurally pre-loaded for the leg-sacrifice. Page 15’s mousetrap metaphor doubles as the metaphor for Zeff’s irreversible commitment .
Ch. 56 page 18 —
leg-loss event time-stamped
The flashback-Zeff has both legs intact . The leg-loss is time-boxed to occur after this chapter’s panel and before the present-day Baratie. The Chekhov plant from Ch. 43 (peg-leg established) is now narrowed to a single causal window — the leg-loss is in the post-page-18 portion of the Sanji/Zeff backstory chapters. The popular reading (Zeff ate his own leg to feed boy-Sanji on a starvation-island) is structurally available in the chapter’s setup: the pirate attack on the Orbit (page 17-18) is the inciting event, and the shipwreck-aftermath is the expected dramatic location for the leg-loss.
