The seed
Pearl debuts with two large iron shields integrated into his chest and arms, iron cymbal-rimmed helmet. The composition treats the armor as body, not equipment. When Gin shatters the chest-shield (page 17), Pearl panics in KLANG-not-pain — armored-coward whose identity is the armor.
The payoff
Forward-payoff: the Iron-Wall Pearl nickname and the blood-on-Pearl-triggers-rage mechanic will fully unfold in Ch. 60-61.
Why this matters
Pattern: Oda introduces the visible effect of the character’s psychological core before naming it. Pearl’s armor-as-identity is the armored-coward archetype prototype — the character whose surface-defense is his self-concept; cracking the surface cracks the character.
