The seed

The payoff

Predicted: the Sanji/Zeff backstory (eventual reveal Ch. 56-58) is the emotional load-bearing reveal of the Baratie arc. The peg-leg is its anchor-prop. Predicted resolution: Zeff and a young Sanji were marooned on a rock at sea without food; Zeff ate his own leg to feed Sanji.

Why this matters

The peg-leg is the single most important prop-tell in the Baratie arc. Pattern marker: Oda introduces the visible effect of a backstory before the backstory in chapters where the backstory will be load-bearing later. Cf. Nami’s tattoo (Ch. 8 → revealed Ch. 78), Zoro’s three swords (Ch. 5 → Kuina backstory Ch. 5-6), Hancock’s slave-mark (Ch. 521 → revealed Ch. 521), Zeff’s peg-leg (Ch. 43 → predicted reveal Ch. 56-58).

The chapter dialogue misdirects — Luffy thinks he caused the injury; the kitchen staff correct him. The misdirection itself is the hook that makes the reader want to know the real cause.
