Ch. 59 page 17: Gin’s twin tonfa-clubs shatter Pearl’s iron-shield carapace, in direct defiance of Krieg’s prior order to “Blow a hole in Zeff’s head” (page 11) and to “Double-check Pearl” (page 16).
The payoff
Forward-payoff: Ch. 60-68 will resolve the full defection arc (Gin refuses to gas Sanji at Krieg’s order, dies by Krieg’s poison gas).
Why this matters
The proxy-defiance-before-direct-defiance progression is one of Oda’s signature loyalty-break arcs. The lieutenant who breaks with the captain does so first via a target adjacent to the captain (Pearl), then escalates to direct opposition. The pattern preserves narrative pacing — the full break comes in stages rather than in a single panel.
