Chapter 434: Whitebeard and Red-Hair

Summary

At sea, the Marines go on high alert as word spreads that Red-Hair and Whitebeard “will make contact with each other” — Shanks’s fleet has broken through the Navy cordon and is boarding Whitebeard’s ship (pp. 2-3). The newcomers among Whitebeard’s crew buckle and pass out from Shanks’s mere presence; Marco (First Division Commander) and Jozu (Third Division Commander) explain it is Shanks’s overwhelming Haki — “those who have a weak will can’t even remain standing in the presence of that man” (pp. 3-6). Shanks comes in peace, bearing medicinal water and a cask of wine from West Blue, his hometown, and the two old rivals drink and reminisce: twenty-two years have passed since the era of Roger, Garp and Sengoku; Shanks was a mere apprentice on Roger’s ship alongside the red-nosed Buggy; he lost his arm “for the sake of the new era” (pp. 6-11). Shanks then turns grave: his three eye-scars were given to him by Blackbeard (Teach) — a man hiding inside Whitebeard’s own crew, biding his time with his own will to one day seize the top (pp. 11-12). His request is for Whitebeard to call off Ace, who is hunting Teach; Whitebeard refuses, because Teach broke the iron law that a pirate may not kill a crewmate, and he owes his dead sons vengeance (pp. 13-15). The two release their Haki and “split the heavens,” parting without a fight (pp. 15-17). Elsewhere on the Grand Line, the Blackbeard Pirates read of the Straw Hats razing Enies Lobby, set course for it to claim Luffy’s rising bounty — and Ace finally catches up to Teach: “I’ve been looking for you!” (pp. 18-20). New reveals

• Whitebeard’s first on-page appearance. Edward Newgate is finally shown — a colossal, IV-tethered figure on his throne who has “fought against Roger’s ship so many times” and remembers his crew’s faces (pp. 7-12). His scars “ache” when he sees Shanks because they came from Roger (p. 7). His named commanders debut: Marco (First Division, p. 3) and Jozu (Third Division, p. 3); the numbered-division structure is canonized and Ace is floated as a Second Division leader candidate (p. 13).
• Shanks’s three eye-scars came from Blackbeard. Shanks reveals the iconic scars were given by Marshall D. Teach, not Mihawk or any adventure (pp. 11-12). He warns these scars are “the only one that aches right now,” and that Teach “hid himself behind the giant shadow of Whitebeard,” waiting “with his own will” to “aim for your seat” (p. 12).
• Teach’s crime and the crew-as-family doctrine. Whitebeard explains that any pirate he takes aboard “becomes like a son to me,” and Teach “committed the one unforgivable crime” — killing a crewmate (“Pirates may not kill their crewmates! That is an iron law!”). The souls of his dead sons “call out for vengeance” (p. 14). This is why Ace is hunting Teach, and why Whitebeard refuses Shanks’s plea to stop him.
• Shanks is from West Blue. The wine he brings is “from West Blue” — “a wine from my hometown” (p. 8).
• “Haki” is named on-page. Shanks’s and Whitebeard’s overwhelming presence is explicitly called Haki — strong enough to knock out the weak-willed, and when the two clash it “splits the heavens / splits the clouds” (pp. 4-7, 15-17).
• Ace reaches Blackbeard. The Blackbeard Pirates head for Enies Lobby chasing the Straw Hats’ rising notoriety; Ace arrives at last: “Hold on, Teach… I’ve been looking for you!” (pp. 18-20).
