Why this matters
Ch. 164 is the third Vivi-childhood flashback chapter. Together with Ch. 142 (world-stage) and Ch. 163 (home-ground first meeting), the three chapters bracket Vivi’s pre-mission childhood:
- World-stage diplomacy (Ch. 142) — Vivi at age 8 at Mariejois; learns composure-as-public-mask.
- Home-ground first-meeting (Ch. 163) — Vivi at age 7 meets Koza in Alubarna; learns fight-as-equals-with-commoner-children.
- Home-ground friendship-origin (Ch. 164) — Vivi at ~age 12 with Koza in Nanohana-adjacent oasis; learns don’t-die-for-me princess-doctrine + sees Toh-Toh off to Yuba.
The home-ground beats are the load-bearing ones: they explain why Vivi will cross the Grand Line to save Alabasta. The chapter is the origin of Vivi’s people-not-throne mission-framework.
The trilogy also installs Vivi’s operational support network: Cobra (father / pedagogue), Igaram (bodyguard / oath-keeper), Koza (childhood friend / future rebel-leader), Toh-Toh (commoner-elder / future Yuba-builder), Pell + Chaka (Royal Guard captains). Every Alabasta-arc figure is structurally introduced via Vivi’s childhood — the kingdom is the people she grew up with.
