Oda explains a real-world-mirroring shipbuilding-ceremony cosmology: opening ceremony → completion ceremony → launch christening (champagne bottle struck against the bow — *if the bottle doesn't break, it's a bad omen*). Summary
Cover-story (p. 1): Django’s Dance Paradise, Vol. 3 — The Onion Appears!! — Django (the former Black Cat Pirates first mate) is shown at a meal table, the Marine-base setting suggesting he has joined the Marines; chomping sounds and a Black-Cat jolly-roger burst frame the comic B-plot.
The main story resumes mid-crisis on the Going Merry, fleeing Little Garden’s waters. Dorry and Brogy shout the chapter’s title-mandate to the departing Strawhats: We will allow no enemy to trample on our friends’ pride!!! Have faith in us and sail STRAIGHT AHEAD!!! (p. 2). A colossal goldfish-shaped Sea King — the Island Eater — surfaces directly in the Merry’s path (pp. 3-5). Usopp recognizes it (A giant goldfish!? I think I’ve heard of this somewhere!!!, p. 4); Nami screams to turn the ship (p. 4). Luffy, trusting the giants, orders the crew to sail straight ahead!!! into the monster’s mouth (pp. 4-5). The giants name the monster — Island Eater… that monster eats whole islands! And his poop is truly colossal (p. 6) — and reminisce about mistaking one’s dung for a continent and landing on it. Dorry and Brogy then raise the legendary Spear of the Giants of Elbaph (their paired duel-weapons, p. 7) and strike the Island Eater together: Hakoku Sovereignty!!! (p. 8) — blasting a hole clean through the monster (p. 11) and launching the Going Merry out into open sky (TA—DAH! YAHOO!!! We’re flying out!!!, p. 10). An extended flashback (pp. 12-16) reveals the origin of Dorry and Brogy’s century-long duel. Long ago, a group of ruffians calling themselves the Pirate Giants terrorized the seas — led by Broggy the Red and Dorry the Blue, warriors of unimaginable strength. One day each chief caught a HUMONGOUS SEA MONSTER the same day; a little girl asked which one is bigger? (pp. 13-14). The two began arguing over a difference of almost two inches — and the dispute became their duel. In the present-day flashback-bracket, neither giant can fully remember the original cause (there’s something I can’t remember… Oh, never mind!! Let’s just settle this!!!, p. 15) — the duel has long outlived its own reason. KLANG!! — the duel resumes; but that was… a long time ago (p. 15).
Aboard the now-free Merry (p. 16), Usopp vows: I’m going to Elbaph!! to the village of warriors!!! and leads a celebratory Elbaf song. Nami, however, is exhausted from the adventure and asks Vivi to watch the Log Pose. Vivi, glad the giants’ island is behind them, tells Nami Now finally… you can go home (p. 17); Vivi recommits to the Alabasta mission — Yes. I’ve got to get home. …and save my kingdom… (p. 17). A recap-panel shows Crocodile menacing Vivi (Your father, the King, is powerless now!! …You must live!!!, p. 17).
Cut to Sandy Island Harbor, the Kingdom of Alabasta (p. 18): a Baroque Works strike-team readies the ship Swanda and calls for Mr. 2 Bon Clay — the boss’s orders are to eliminate Mr. 3 for his Little-Garden failure, and the agents are too frightened of Mr. 3 to do it without Mr. 2’s help. Mr. 2 is not shown — only his swan-ship and an おかま道 (‘way of the okama’) sign.
Back on the Merry (p. 19), Nami says Vivi, I’m sorry. I need some rest and lies down on deck. Vivi notices something is wrong (p. 19); Zoro and Luffy react; Vivi cries Everyone!! Come quickly!!! - What is wrong with Nami — what illness has she caught? The chapter ends on Nami burning with fever; no diagnosis. Forward-canon: a Grand-Line illness (‘5-day disease’) requiring a doctor — the Strawhats have no ship’s doctor, which drives the Drum Island arc and the Tony Tony Chopper recruitment.
- Will the Strawhats find a doctor / land in time? The fever cliffhanger sets the immediate next-arc objective. Forward-canon: they reach Drum Island.
