Syrup Village (Ch. 41) — Hilltop departure-watcher; new ambition: doctor (caption-prefigure)

• Watches the Going Merry depart from the hilltop with Carrot and Pepper (page 13).
• Inherits Usopp’s “PIRATES ARE COMING!” morning ritual (page 18).
• New ambition announced in cover-story-prefigure caption (page 18, final caption-quote): “I’M GOING TO BECOME A DOCTOR.” The caption is paired with “SPLENDID… A MOST WORTHY GOAL.” (in absentia future-Usopp approval). This is new on-page — Ch 40 page 17 had Onion: novelist. Ch 41 either changes or adds doctor as Onion’s ambition. Forward-pattern: the doctor ambition functions as a village-shadow-recruitment prefiguring Chopper’s eventual recruitment as the Straw Hats’ doctor (Drum Island, Ch 153). Cover-story payoff queued. Syrup Village (Ch. 40) — Arc-finale: swears the cover-up oath; domestic scene (broken-glasses gag); states ambition (novelist); witnesses the disbandment

• Present at the post-fight scene; swears to carry the Black-Cat-raid secret (page 9).
• Domestic scene (page 11): mother berates him for broken glasses (“You broke your glasses AGAIN, Onion?!” — the recurring broken-glasses gag); he requests raw eggs over hot rice. Establishes the village-morning-routine montage that demonstrates the cover-up’s success.
• States ambition: “To write novels!” (page 17). One of the three Usopp Pirates’ on-page-named adult ambitions; bonded to Usopp’s captain’s-final-charge swear. See Carrot Onion Pepper Promise (new this chapter).
• Witnesses Usopp’s disbandment of the Usopp Pirates (page 19). Released from the captain/follower bond as a parting gift.

Syrup Village (Ch. 39) — Fake-unconscious moral-reasoning conversation; overturns Usopp’s coward-doctrine; witnesses will-signing and bell-finish

• Lies in fake-unconsciousness with Carrot and Pepper after Jango clubs them down (page 10) — eyes open just enough to dialogue while looking unconscious for the villain’s benefit. The chapter’s children-on-the-ground-having-the-moral-conversation composition stages all three kids reasoning out the captain’s true philosophy from the evidence in front of them.
• Participates in overturning Usopp’s stated coward-doctrine (page 10): “We’re not gonna let Kaya die!! He kept fighting until he was all bloody. Captain Usopp’s not like that!” The kids upgrade their captain’s stated philosophy (“if you think you’re going to lose, run away and hide”) to match his demonstrated heroism on-page across the arc. First on-page beat in the series of subordinate corrects captain’s stated philosophy by appeal to his demonstrated philosophy — the prototype for crew-as-moral-mirror. Onion is one of three voices delivering the doctrine-overturn.
• Witnesses the will-signing, the hypnotist’s “Now you have to die” line, Usopp’s rescue arrival, the bell-blow finish (pages 10-19). Reaction-character in the forest-and-cliff B-plot resolution.

Syrup Village (Ch. 38) — Lands the slingshot pepper-powder direct-hit on Django; named by Usopp mid-ambush

• Fires the slingshot at Django that lands the pepper-powder direct-hit (page 8). Usopp shouts “ONION!!” in the ambush sequence — Onion is the named-and-credited slingshot operator. The pepper-powder shake blinds Django; the trio drops on him from above (“You’ll have plenty of time to regret messing with real pirates… in HELL!!!” — page 9). Onion’s slingshot is the trigger of the ambush — the chapter’s first combat-grade use of a slingshot by a non-Usopp Usopp Pirate. Onion as the slingshot kid of the trio is now visually canonical.
• Part of the trio’s “We just PRETENDED to be hypnotized!!” reveal (page 7) — the kid-crew’s coordinated tactic against the hypnotist.
• Status at chapter end: alive, in the forest with the trio + Kaya, victorious over Django. The chapter completes the kid-crew-as-operational-pirate arc-beat — Onion’s slingshot use is the literal first-combat-instrument moment for the trio.

Syrup Village (Ch. 36) — Fleeing with Usopp and Kaya from Butchie’s forest rampage

• Flees with Usopp, Kaya, and the other two kids (Carrot (Mink), Pepper) from Django + Butchie. The Ch 35 Kaya-escort-detail role (captain’s-order from Usopp) is now operationally live in the forest chase — kids running with Kaya while paralyzed-Usopp is pinned by Butchie further back.
• When Kaya collapses with fever (page 21), one of the kids urges Usopp’s pirate crew to “be prepared” (“Usopp’s pirate crew must be prepared!! At a time like this…”) — the Ch 35 captain-loyalty register is reinforced in the captain-absent (paralyzed and being carried) mode. The kids’ loyalty to Usopp’s captaincy is now operationally autonomous of the captain’s presence. See Usopp Pirate Captain Self-Identification (new this chapter).
• Status at chapter end: alive, with Kaya as Kuro materializes at their position (“So here you are.” page 21).

Syrup Village (Ch. 31) — Truth

• On the beach with Carrot and Pepper (page 10) after sleeping out.
• Verbal beat (page 11): “Me too! He was acting really weird yesterday. I was thinking that too.” — second of the three kids to confirm the believed-Usopp position. Continues the trio’s bravado-mimicry and total faith in their captain register.
• Reaction-character through pages 10-11.

Syrup Village (Ch. 27)

• Present at the cliff-hollow conference with the Straw Hats; panics into hide-the-valuables mode when Usopp reports the pirate threat (“Piggy bank… snacks… model ship… what else?”).
• Believes Usopp’s “I just made it all up, as usual!! TA-DA!!” lie at the chapter’s end (page 18) — weeps at the cliff thinking his captain has died (page 16), then leaves for dinner-time obliviousness.
• The trio’s bravado-mimicry and total faith in their captain’s tall tales is the chapter’s parody-crew register — see Usopps Crew Pirates In Miniature.

Syrup Village (Ch. 25)

• Hysterical reporter of village curiosities — runs in screaming “A BACKWARDS MAN!! IT’S HORRIBLE!! WAAAH!!” about Django walking backwards through the village (page 11, TMP TMP TMP SFX). Named on-page by his fellow kid-pirate (“ONION!” / “YEAH, ONION!”).
• Sits on the fence speculating about Luffy and Usopp’s whereabouts with the rest of the trio (page 10) — the children’s testimony establishes Usopp’s habitual “PIRATES ARE COMING!” cry as village routine: “Whenever something happens, that’s where he goes… and then he comes running back screaming…”
• Witnesses Django’s self-hypnosis comedy beat (page 13) — first villain-introduction the trio is structurally present for.
• The chapter further canonizes the trio as mini-Usopps performing exaggerated alarms — the lying performance style is a Syrup Village kid-culture thing, not just Usopp’s individual quirk.

Syrup Village (Ch. 24)

• Named on page 2 of Ch. 24 (“Onion, are you sure those pirates went in here?”) — first in-dialogue use of the name in the active arc.
• Bursts into the village restaurant with Carrot (Mink) and Pepper chasing “the pirates” who supposedly “took the Captain” — false alarm (Usopp left voluntarily to visit Kaya).
• Reaffirms the trio’s admiration: “I like the captain because he’s so boastful! / I like the captain because he’s so bossy!” (page 11).
