“Gram” · unknown (flashback) · Captain of the Polo Pirates
Profile
Captain of the Polo Pirates, present at the God Valley Incident (~38 yrs ago, West Blue). A self-proclaimed “big fan” of Newgate who — noting Newgate’s crew was “falling apart” and that Newgate had “no ship to go back to” — tried to recruit him (“Team up with me instead!!”), only to be told “Get outta my hair!!” (Ch. 1165, p. 11). Introduced with the on-page caption “CAPTAIN OF THE POLO PIRATES / POLO GRAM.” Grinning, scarred, big-framed; the one who “knocked down that mountain.” Name etymology (resolved): ポーロ・グラム / Pōro Guramu. Per SBS Vol. 115, Gram is the father of Marco, whose full name is officially ポーロ・マルコ / Pōro Maruko (“Polo Marco”) — family-name-first, so reversing the pair to Western order spells Marco Polo, the Venetian explorer. The “Polo” surname also puns on 菠萝/bōluó, Chinese for pineapple (Marco’s hairstyle). See Marco And His Father Polo Gram Spell Marco Polo and Rocks and God Valley.

Notes
- Etymology pass resolved (2026-07): “Polo Gram” + son “Polo Marco” = Marco Polo (Venetian explorer), Oda-confirmed via SBS Vol. 115; “Polo” also puns on Chinese bōluó (pineapple → Marco’s hair). High confidence. See Marco And His Father Polo Gram Spell Marco Polo.
