The seed

Ch. 109 page 12 — Igaram (close-up, ominous): “Fleeing down a rabbit hole won’t save you… Now I’ll give you a taste… of real fear.” Zoro evades Igaram’s saxophone-barrage by leaping into a hidden tunnel between the town’s cactus-cake-shaped buildings. The chapter installs the town’s architecture as combat-infrastructure — what looks like a quirky-style party-town has weaponized trap-passages designed for Baroque-Works officer ambush.

Why this matters

Pure fairy-tale-overlay technique. Igaram explicitly invokes Alice-in-Wonderland (“rabbit hole”) to describe the town’s hidden geometry — Whisky Peak is the friendly surface of Wonderland concealing the menacing logic underneath. Forward-pattern: every later Crocodile-controlled location operates on the same structural register:

  • Rainbase Casino — surface: gambling-resort glamour; substructure: water-prison and Crocodile’s underground bunker.
  • Crocodile’s Underground Tomb — surface: a desert tourist-attraction; substructure: a clock-tomb death-trap with Vivi as the bomb-target.
  • Alabasta itself — surface: a kingdom in civil war; true structure: Crocodile orchestrating both sides of the war to seize Pluton.

The chapter installs the surface-friendly-but-trap-substructure doctrine that defines every Baroque-Works combat-environment for the rest of the arc-sequence. Form = function = thematic-statement: the same crew that disguises its weapons as instruments (Mr 8 Igarappa Saxophone-Gun Attack) and its officers as bounty-hunters (Baroque Works Bounty-Hunter Front Doctrine) also disguises its towns as welcoming party-villages.
