Ch. 109 page 1 — cover-story title-card: Koby and Helmeppo’s Chronicle of Toil Vol. 22: “We’re So Useless”. Both Marine chore-boys are shown crouched at floor-level beneath the legs of unseen senior officers, faces twisted in mortified anguish.

Why this matters

Vol. 22 is the first cover-installment where the boys verbally name their own inadequacy — the cover-arc’s tonal pivot from chore-suffering (Vols. 1-21) to self-criticism (Vol. 22 forward). The We’re So Useless doctrine is the structural threshold between the boys’ victim-phase and their resolve-phase.

Forward-pattern: the cover-arc will end with Garp recruiting them as personal trainees (Loguetown era), pre-loading their eventual rank-promotions (Koby to Marine Captain post-time-skip; Helmeppo to lieutenant). The useless-then-trained-by-Garp-then-rank-promoted arc is one of Oda’s longest-burn cover-story-payoff chains in the entire series.

The earlier cover-installments tracked the boys as passive recipients of Marine discipline (Vols. 2-9 chore-grind, Vols. 11-15 prison-ship-transit, Vols. 16-20 Morgan-escape and return). Vol. 22’s We’re So Useless is the first beat where the boys narrate their own state — the structural mark of subject-formation, the threshold of agency.
