Ch. 109 page 9 — Ms. Wednesday (mid-combat, taunting Zoro): “You want someone worth fighting!? That would be me!! Prepare to die, Mr. Bushido!!” — accompanied by an on-page VIZ translator footnote: “*Bushido means ‘the way of the samurai’ in Japanese.”

The payoff

Why this matters

Pure nickname-permanence + translator-paratext technique. The translator-footnote is itself a load-bearing paratext-leak — VIZ is flagging the term as load-bearing before its in-universe permanence is established. The chapter is the first-utterance install of a nickname that will outlive the disguise-context.

The address-pattern echoes the Baroque-Works Mr.-Number / Ms.-Day affect — Vivi retains the Baroque-Works naming convention as her emotional-default for the crew that liberated her. Mr. Bushido is structurally a Mr.-Codename-style address — Vivi’s lifetime use of it preserves the Baroque-Works grammar as her affectionate-form for the Straw Hat she most trusts in combat.

Translator-paratext-leaks are a Oda-Vol-pattern: VIZ often footnotes terms that will later become canonical nicknames or in-universe terms. The asterisk is a paratext-level Chekhov’s gun — if the translator stops to explain a term mid-combat, the term is being primed for later structural use.
