• Depicted in a short flashback fragment intercut with the present-day serpent Nola’s “Tulala/Julalala” cry: Calgara is shown teaching the snake the bell-call, meaning the sound of the Golden Bell he wanted to send all the way to Noland — “We’re going to ring the bell so it echoes to the ends of the seas again… Let’s make the sound of the bell you love so much reach all the way to Noland!” (p. 7). Skypiea — flashback coda retold (Ch. 293) — flashback-narration; no new present-day appearance

• The legend’s close: Calgara kept shouting “Bring back the light of Shandora!” believing the bell’s sound would reach his friend Mont Blanc Noland across the sea — “but that bell did not ring” (pp. 4–5). His biggest regret is that those feelings never reached his friend. (Narration to the present-day Shandians; a child asks “If we rang it now… would it reach Noland?”, p. 5.)

Calgara / Noland flashback — climax: the launch, the war, and Calgara’s death (Ch. 292) — flashback, ~400 years ago; dies on-page

• Shown thriving in rebuilt Shandora “one year before Noland’s return”; vows to keep ringing the golden bell so Noland can find them again (pp. 12-13).
• Greets the giant snake by name — “Nola” (p. 12), the first on-page utterance of that name.

Skypiea — The bell-ringing vow (Ch. 291) — flashback, ~400 years ago; shown alive on-page

• The friendship flashback reaches its climax. After refusing to speak to Noland over the felled Ancestor Trees (pp. 2-3, 7-8), Calgara learns from his daughter Mousse — too late — that Noland cut the sacred trees because they were already infected with deadly “tree fever” and would have destroyed the whole island, and that Noland risked his own life to save the Shandians (relayed pp. 12-14).
• As Noland’s ship sails for the Lvneel Kingdom, Calgara rings the great golden bell and swears the bell-ringing vow: “We’ll keep ringing the bell for you!! … We’ll be here… always!!” — “so that when you return, your boat won’t get lost on the ocean… so that you won’t lose your way to this island, even in a storm!!” (pp. 16-19).
• Both men, weeping across the widening sea: “Come back again!! I’ll be waiting for you here on this island!!” / “Let’s meet again… my friend!!” / “I promise you!!” (pp. 17-19). This is the in-flashback ORIGIN of Calgara’s later final order (“bring back the light of Shandora”) and the Song of the Island legend.

Skypiea — the Noland flashback: Calgara shows Noland the Golden Bell, then the friendship sours (Ch. 290)

• The plague is cured and Calgara has fully reconciled with Mont Blanc Noland; the two are now close friends, to the astonishment of a village that had never seen Calgara warm to anyone (pages 2–3).
• Calgara takes Noland down a cliff to reveal Shandora, the City of Gold, and its Giant Golden Bell; he corrects the outsiders — “We weren’t protecting the treasure!! …We’ve been protecting the city” — and explains the poneglyph, the duty of the city’s descendants, and the bell as a message (“We’re right here”) rung so ancestral souls can find their way home (pages 8–10).
• Calgara names the bell “the Light of Shandora” (page 11) — the on-page identification of the “light” he will later, dying, order his people to “bring back.” See Calgara Final Order Bring Back The Light Of Shandora.
• “One month after landfall,” the friendship curdles: Calgara learns Noland’s crew has been cutting down the sacred forest and turns on them, vowing “If I see him again, I just might kill him!! …I never want to see his face again.” (pages 16–19). The on-page seed of the misunderstanding that gets Noland branded a liar.
• Alive at chapter’s end — Calgara does NOT die here.

Skypiea — Noland/Calgara flashback, “Full Moon” (Ch. 289) — on-page in flashback

• Sustained on-page depiction of Calgara in his prime .
• The sacrificial girl set to be burned alive is revealed to be Calgara’s own daughter — the same child Mont Blanc Noland’s medicine had saved the day before (pages 11–12): “Do you really think that even the girl you saved yesterday… was my own daughter?!” (the maiden is Mousse).
• Calgara has “just now” killed the serpent-god Kashigami and believes he “broke the commandment and killed a god” (pages 17–18). He then begs Noland: “Can you save it?! Will you really save my precious village?!” — Noland: “I CAN!!”
• Noland’s antidote (conine, from the Kona tree) works; the village recovers and Calgara reconciles with Noland’s crew in the full-moon peace montage (pages 19–21). This is the origin of the Noland↔Calgara friendship and Calgara’s “one more reason” to reclaim Shandora (paying off Kalgara Had One More Reason To Reclaim His Homeland Tee-Up).
  • Conine = JP コニーネ / Konīne — Oda’s spelling of real-world coniine, the poisonous alkaloid of Conium maculatum (poison hemlock); Fandom flags the tie explicitly. The grim irony: the deadly hemlock toxin is the cure for “Tree Fever,” the inversion-of-expectation that mirrors the whole Noland legend (the “god-killer” is the healer). Kona tree = コナの木 / Kona no Ki — “kona” can read as 粉 (“powder/flour”) but NO source glosses it; left unglossed.

Skypiea — Noland flashback: Calgara duels the intruder (Ch. 288)

• Sustained on-page appearance in the historical flashback . Great warrior of the Shandians, defending a human-sacrifice ceremony to their snake-god Kashigami. Crosses blades with the foreign explorer Mont Blanc Noland (pp. 2-5): “You have no right to lecture me, intruder!!”; vows “We’ll make one hundred of you pay with your lives!!” (p. 7).
• Struck down / wounded in the duel (p. 6 SLUMP); later bandaged and declares “I’m cured” (p. 14).
• After Noland kills the snake-god Kashigami and the “curse” earthquake strikes, Calgara confronts him over the corpse: “You killed Kashigami. Skypiea — Noland↔Calgara flashback: Calgara shown alive, dying of the plague (Ch. 287)

• A wild-maned Shandian warrior, feverish and dying of the plague that is annihilating the village, on the day Noland’s North Sea expedition lands on the surface-world Jaya (pages 9-10).
• His defining cry: “I don’t want to die this way!! I wanted to fight to protect this land!! I wanted to be a courageous warrior!!” (page 10) — a warrior who cannot accept dying of disease rather than in battle.
• A Shandian boy admires him — “…to be just like you someday!!” (pages 9-10).

Skypiea — first shown on-page (flashback begins) (Ch. 286)

• First on-page appearance. Calgara is introduced as the feared “Demon of Shandora” who, 400 years ago on the surface-world Jaya, attacked the crew of a foreign exploration ship with a swung chain-and-ball flail, driving the sailors to flee (pp. 11-14). Nameplate caption: “KALGARA — THE GREAT WARRIOR OF SHANDORA” (p. 14).
• Dialogue: “Leave everything behind… and go.” / “I will eliminate you!” (pp. 13-14).
• Framing reveal (Enel, pp. 9-10): Kalgara’s withheld “one other reason” for wanting to reclaim his homeland was a dear friend — and that friend was Mont Blanc Noland. The hostile first encounter shown here is the seed of the legendary friendship. See The Noland Legend and the City of Gold.

Notes

• ETYMOLOGY: no sourced meaning found. JP reading recorded (カルガラ). “Kalgara”↔“Calgara” is a romanization of the one katakana (JP R≈L flap), not two names. The Shandia’s Mesoamerican coding and Shandora’s Maya/El-Dorado design give a plausible warrior-name register but no source attaches a real-world figure to “Calgara” — not asserted per the “bad data is worse than no data” rule.
• Per batch reconciliation (248–277): Calgara is mentioned in legend only across this batch and is never shown on-page. first_appearance must remain blank. Ch. 276 teases “one more reason” — record as a Foreshadowing hook in a later chapter, not an appearance.
