A Logia-type Devil Fruit that turns the user into and lets them generate/control
lightning/electricity. Named on-page for the first time in Ch. 266 (p. 13)
as “the most powerful Devil Fruit of the Logia type. And Eneru has its powers!!” —
alongside Enel’s self-description “I am lightning” / “invincible.” The user’s body
becomes intangible lightning (Logia intangibility implied by the “invincible” framing).
Oda-sourced: Thor = the Norse thunder-god; “El” = the Northwest Semitic word for “god/deity” (Hebrew אֵל) — the same theonym that descends into “Enel” (← Sumerian Enlil / Semitic El). So “El Thor” = “the God Thor” / “the God of Thunder.” Also readable as Spanish/Arabic article el → “The Thor.” A vertical lightning-judgment strike called down from above — encodes Enel’s self-deification. See El Thor Enels Named Lightning Judgment Strike.
Ch. 273 (p. 12; annihilates the giant serpent “in one attack”)
A voltage-rated lightning discharge/strike; the mass-discharge form “silenced 20 voices” Ch. 264, the named 20-million-volt single-target strike drops Gan Fall Ch. 274
discharge form Ch. 264 (pp. 16–17); “20 million volt Varie” named single-strike Ch. 274 (pp. 14–16)
A 200-300 Million Volt thunderbird shaped from Enel’s back-mounted taiko drums — a giant electric bird-beast launched at the enemy; “Hi-no-Tori” (firebird/phoenix) form deepens the Raijin/thunder-god styling
Shapes Enel’s lightning “into a form” — hardens it into a blade (“think of it as lightning in a form”); the counter to rubber’s electrical immunity, routing through rubber’s sharp-object weakness
Sea-Prism Stone disables it on contact — first shown Ch. 275.Wyper’s Reject-Dial shooter has Sea-Stone embedded; point-blank contact strips Enel’s powers (“It’s true, I can’t summon my powers!”, p. 12-13). First on-page proof that the “strongest Logia” is neutralized by the universal anti-Devil-Fruit material. See Sea-Prism Stone, Sea-Prism Stone Reject Shooter Disables Enel Anti-God Material.
Rubber is the in-arc counter. A non-conductor of electricity — flagged forward as the
Chekhov-explicit setup planted by the “most powerful Logia” billing: the arc must justify
how a fruit billed as the strongest Logia is overcome (the Luffy-vs-Enel rubber-immune-to-
lightning payoff). See Nature of Devil Fruits.
Behaviorally confirmed Ch. 282: Enel refuses to fight Luffy in melee (“I can’t risk… having you injure me again”, p. 12) and uses molten gold + a ranged El Thor rather than his lightning body — the “most powerful Logia” cannot beat the one opponent its electricity does not affect. The explicit non-conductor rule is forward-canon (uncaptured).
Lore & theories
The “most powerful Logia” claim (Ch. 266) is a power-statement Oda plants to set
up its own subversion — cross-link Nature of Devil Fruits.
Etymology
ゴロゴロ (goro goro) — Japanese onomatopoeia for the rumbling of thunder / a low rolling
rumble; VIZ renders it “Rumble-Rumble.” The reduplicated form ゴロゴロ様 (gorogoro-sama) is
Japanese children’s word for thunder — so the fruit’s name is, almost literally, “the thunder-thunder
fruit.”
It interlocks with the whole Raijin/thunder-god scaffolding Oda builds around the user:
Enel’s name is the kana ‐identical エネル, the homophone of ENEL (Italy’s national
electricity utility), and is also read as the storm-/sky-god theonym Enlil (Sumerian) and/or El
(Semitic, “god”) — the same “El” that fronts his signature attack El Thor (El + Thor, the Norse
thunder-god). His drum-backed design is the Japanese Raijin (thunder-god).
Enel introduces himself “我が神なり” (ware ga kami nari, “I am God”), a pun on the homophonous “我が雷なり”
(ware ga kaminari, “I am Lightning”) — and 雷 kaminari itself derives from 神鳴り, “the sound/voice of
the gods” (kami + nari). The fruit’s onomatopoeia, the user’s name, and his god-complex all rhyme.
Oda gives Enel’s birthday as May 6 — go (五) + ro (六) = go-ro, a goro-awase pun on the fruit.
Confidence: high — onomatopoeia + ENEL/Enlil/El + El Thor (Thor) are all Oda/SBS-sourced via Fandom.
