Name meaning
Raigo / 雷迎 (VIZ declares it 'Kingdom Come'; Funimation keeps 'Raigo'). CONFIRMED name-as-meaning (Fandom, on the Goro Goro no Mi page): the name is a HOMOPHONIC PUN on 来迎 (raigō), a Japanese-Buddhist term for the descent of Amitābha/Amida Buddha on a (purple) cloud to WELCOME the spirits of the dead into the Pure Land (the gōraigō/raigō motif of Pure Land art). Oda swaps the first 来 (rai, 'coming/welcoming') for 雷 (rai, 'thunder/lightning') → the rendered 雷迎 reads as a 'thunder-welcome': Enel, styling himself God, drops a cloud-borne sphere to 'welcome' an island's population into death. The pun fuses the Buddhist death-escort imagery (cloud + the dead) with mass annihilation — the ironic divine 'welcome' of judgment. VIZ's 'Kingdom Come' (the Lord's-Prayer phrase / a death idiom) localizes the same God-bringing-the-end register.

Structural lore — what Oda has confirmed about this. Mysteries (unsolved questions) live in Vault/Threads/; this is what the world IS.

What we know

  • Ch. 293: First shown swelling. As Enel fires from the deck of the Ark Maxim to demolish Skypiea, the giant thundercloud over Upper Yard is shown swelling with continuous rumbling (pp. 6-7, 13-16) — the build-up of his later doomsday cloud weapon. The name “Raigo” is NOT spoken on-page this chapter; only the growing cloud + lightning bombardment appear. This is the weapon’s earliest on-page build-up.
  • Ch. 294: The sphere is dropped — Angel Island erased. Aboard the Ark Maxim (having “surpassed Giant Jack,” p. 2), Enel condenses the entire sky thundercloud cover into a single colossal black sphere — the Raigo — over Angel Island and drops/detonates it, erasing Angel Island and the sea-cloud it rested on “without a trace” (pp. 10–14, “it’s gone without a trace”). Enel: “With the Ark Maxim and my power, I can perform the greatest miracles the world has ever seen!! …Heaven is mine!” (p. 11). The VIZ declaration “KINGDOM COME!!!” is shouted on-page here as the sphere falls — hence first_mentioned advances to 0294 (the JP formal name “Raigo”/雷迎 is still spoken later Ch. 297). This is the on-page execution of the Ark Maxim doomsday threat seeded since Ch. 272/Ch. 277 (see Enels Ark Maxim Will Destroy Skypiea And Leave For The Sky) — and the worst-case stakes against which Luffy’s vow to ring the Golden Bell is set (see Luffy Vows To Ring The Golden Bell To Prove Noland Was Not Lying).
  • Ch. 295: A NEW, far-larger thundercloud is conjured. After the @0294 Raigo erases Angel Island, Enel — atop the rising Ark Maxim (now slung beneath the Great Golden Bell Tower of Shandora) — fells the Giant Jack westward and amasses a second, much larger thundercloud over Skypiea, explicitly “way bigger than the last one!” (pp. 14, 16) on his way to Endless Varse, bidding “Skypiea, farewell.” This is the build-up of the climactic doomsday cloud (the presumptive larger Raigo precursor); the name “Raigo” (雷迎) is still NOT spoken on-page this chapter (formal naming Ch. 297). MERGE-ONLY: this is the same Raigo-weapon construct — no fork. See Maxim, Enel.
  • Ch. 297: The giant Raigo is conjured, named, and met head-on by Luffy. Aboard the rising Ark Maxim, Enel — “sick of waiting” — condenses the precursor cloud (shown swelling Ch. 295) into a colossal lightning-cloud SPHERE and names it on-page: “KINGDOM COME!!!” (VIZ, p. 11), vowing the country will “disappear along with” it (p. 10). The formal JP name “Raigo” (雷迎) / “this is what a kami summons” framing lands in this chapter. Luffy meets the descending sphere head-on with “Gum-Gum Fireworks / Golden Peony” — a scattering rubber-limb barrage (pp. 13–14). ⭐ The gold on Enel’s right arm acts as a CONDUCTOR (p. 15), grounding the discharge AROUND the rubber-bodied Luffy — the rubber-immunity / gold-as-lightning-rod mechanic of the duel restated at climactic scale. Nami warns Luffy off the sphere as “a whirlpool of wind and lightning” (p. 12). Resolution is withheld (p. 19 cliffhanger on Enel’s shocked face). (Firsts pinned: appearance 0293; “Kingdom Come” declaration / first_mentioned 0294; JP-name spoken 0297.) See Luffy, Goro Goro no Mi, Gomu Gomu no Mi, Luffy Anchor Boy Wardrobe Tell.

Chronology / structure

  • Build-up first shown Ch. 293 (swelling thundercloud over Upper Yard, fired from the Maxim).
  • Dropped / detonated Ch. 294 — whole sky thundercloud condensed into one black sphere, Angel Island + its sea-cloud erased “without a trace”; VIZ declaration “Kingdom Come!!!” lands here (first_mentioned).
  • A new, far-larger thundercloud (“way bigger than the last one!”) is amassed over Skypiea Ch. 295 — the build-up of the larger climactic discharge, conjured from the rising Ark Maxim after the Giant Jack is felled.
  • JP formal name “Raigo” (雷迎) first spoken Ch. 297; the giant sphere is conjured, named “Kingdom Come” on-page (p. 11), and met by Luffy’s “Golden Peony” — the gold on Enel’s arm grounds the discharge around the rubber body (p. 15); outcome withheld (p. 19 cliffhanger).

Open questions about this topic

  • Exactly how the giant cloud’s discharge relates to the Ark Maxim’s power budget and Enel’s Goro Goro charge.

Notes

  • ETYMOLOGY : CONFIRMED. Raigo (雷迎) is a homophonic pun on 来迎 (raigō), the Japanese-Buddhist “welcoming approach” — Amida Buddha descending on a cloud to welcome the spirits of the dead into the Pure Land. Oda swaps 来 (rai, “coming/welcoming”) for 雷 (rai, “thunder”) → a cloud-borne “thunder-welcome”: the God-figure Enel “welcomes” an island into death. Fuses Pure Land death-escort imagery (cloud + the dead) with annihilation; VIZ’s “Kingdom Come” localizes the same God-brings-the-end resonance. Confidence HIGH. Source: One Piece Fandom (MediaWiki API, “Goro Goro no Mi”); cf. WebSearch confirmation of the 来迎→雷迎 swap. See the Foreshadowing entry filed for this name-encoded judgment/death motif.
  • MERGE note (no fork): the 294 reader proposed a separate Foreshadowing/Raigo Kingdom Come Maxim-Powered Doomsday Sphere Erases Angel Island note; per the 278–307 reconciliation, its content (doomsday-payoff framing, the 来迎 etymology pun, the Maxim-threat tie-in) is folded into THIS World-Building note — there is exactly ONE Raigo note. The Raigo-as-doomsday-payoff seed lives on Enels Ark Maxim Will Destroy Skypiea And Leave For The Sky.
