Why this matters
The seed. Ch. 139 pp. 5-7. Big Horn civilians: “The avalanche buried Mr. Dalton!!” / “But those men won’t let us dig him out!!!”. Wapol-vassal-thugs declare “Dalton’s dead!!!”; civilians insist “Mr. Dalton wouldn’t die that easily!!!”. Dalton does not appear on-page; the village’s protector is buried at the exact moment Wapol’s regime reactivates — first-act cliffhanger.
Why it might matter. Dalton was canonized in Ch. 135 as the people’s protector — the de-facto authority villagers run to for help. Burying him alive at the precise moment Wapol’s vassals take over is structural narrative-arithmetic: the protector is removed so the regime can openly re-assert itself. Pre-loads (a) Dalton’s eventual on-page emergence from the snow / revival; (b) his open defiance of Wapol; (c) the post-Wapol re-founding of Drum.
Technique. chekhov-explicit (a character buried alive but contested in dialogue “Mr. Dalton wouldn’t die that easily!!!” is a near-explicit he’s coming back tell); parallel-arc-structure (the protector-buried-then-rises register mirrors Wapol’s exact opposite: king-fled-then-returns — but where Wapol returns as a tyrant, Dalton returns as a rebel).
