Chapter 44: Three Tough Cooks

Summary

The chapter opens on a wide establishing shot of the Baratie — a ship-restaurant with a whale-mouthed prow, the word “RESTAURANT” on its facade, smoke rising from twin chimneys (page 2). Inside, Luffy is negotiating with the head chef (Zeff, identifiable but not named on-page) over damages caused by his earlier witless bombardment — implied by the chef’s dialogue to be a Marine cannonball mishap from a prior off-page scene (page 2: “Your witless bombardment damaged my establishment and injured me.”). Luffy offers a one week indenture; the chef demands a full year. Luffy refuses (“I won’t!!! I’ve already waited ten years to be a pirate!!”, page 3) — and the chef responds with “Chef’s Special — Peg-Leg Kick!!” (page 3, panel 2): the first on-page reveal of Zeff’s peg leg, dropped casually into a comedic disciplinary kick.

After Luffy lands on the floor (page 3 panel 3), the chef offers a quick way out: serve as Baratie’s busboy for the duration. Luffy counters with “Leave one with me!!! Give me a leg!!” (page 5 panel 1) — meaning, leave me one of your legs to wear / let me take a leg in trade — comedy mishearing. The chef performs a Chef Drop finishing move (page 5, panel 3) and slams Luffy through the floor. Luffy emerges, dazed.

Cut to the kitchen (pages 6-7): Patty Cook (named on his apron-tag, page 6) and a second cook (later identifiable as Carne) are working. Patty receives a customer in the dining room and performs the ‘Customer is King’ welcome ritual (page 7): a theatrical hospitality routine (“WELCOME, SQUID-FACE!!” / “DAT’LL BE 10,000 BERRIES, SUCKER!” / “PARDON, MON-SEWER?” / “COME AGAIN YESTERDAY.” / “ENJOY YOUR POOP!”) that culminates in the customer enjoying the meal anyway — “perfect as usual.” The Baratie’s theatrical-rudeness-as-hospitality mode is established as the cook crew’s signature performance.

Page 8: a panicked staffer reports — “A C-C-CUSTOMER?!!” — and the dining hall reveals the chapter’s central tableau. Sanji (named on page 9 by Patty: “Again, Sanji?!!”) — blond, black suit, cigarette, hands one and only one — holds Lt. Fullbody’s head against his soup bowl in retaliation for the customer’s complaint. Sanji’s first on-page line: “Say my name with respect.” / “Hello, crap-cooker.” (received from Fullbody) / Sanji to Fullbody: “How dare you call me ‘crap-cooker’, crap-server?!” (page 8).

Patty intervenes (page 9): “What’re you doing to dat customer?!! And him a naval officer!!” Sanji explains (page 9): “Customer? This lowlife wasted precious food, and he insulted our cooks!!” — and lays out the doctrine: “Customers are the life’s blood of a restaurant!!” Fullbody, bloodied, retaliates with rank-based threat: “I’ll close you down!! I’ll inform the authorities! A restaurant should—” Sanji cuts him off mid-threat: “Not if I close you down first.” (page 9 final panel.)

Sanji then kicks Fullbody through the ceiling (page 10, SHWUMP / KA-BOOSH!!), creating ceiling damage that Patty immediately objects to (“Curses! Look at that ceiling!!”, page 11). Patty and Sanji collapse into a brawl (“That’s your fault, brat!!”, page 11), with Luffy, Fullbody, and Fullbody’s lady all caught in the slapstick. The dining-room fight is the chapter’s set-piece comedy — the Baratie cooks are demonstrably stronger than a Marine lieutenant.

Page 12: Luffy recognizes Fullbody as “the cannon man!” — confirming Fullbody as the source of the earlier off-page cannonball that damaged the Baratie and injured Luffy / the chef. The Marines pursuing Fullbody (a security detachment) clarify (page 13-14): they were transporting a prisoner pirate from Don Krieg’s crew who had been captured three days ago, was half-dead from starvation, and has now escaped after beating up seven Marines. The dialogue on page 14 establishes Krieg’s Pirates as “the toughest pirates in the Eastern Seas!!!” — first on-page mention of Don Krieg and his crew’s regional reputation.

A silhouette enters the dining hall (page 14 final panel, page 15) — the escaped pirate, Gin, half-dead from starvation, has walked into the Baratie. Page 15 shows him collapsed in a chair; page 16: “BRING ME FOOD. ANYTHING…” / “This is a mess joint, ain’t it?!” Gin’s stomach is growling audibly (page 16 wheeze panels). Page 17: Patty performs the welcome ritual (“WELCOME, SQUID-FACE.”) — Gin responds with pirate-customer dynamics (“You don’t decide. I’m a customer. Bring me food!!”) and Patty’s enforcement question (”…Can you pay?”) gets an unspoken answer in the form of Gin’s flintlock pistol drawn at Patty’s head (page 17 final panel: KLIK KLIK).

Patty’s response is the ‘No Money = No Customer’ enforcement (page 18-19): WAK-KRAK!! — Patty slams Gin with a massive overhead double-fist strike. Gin is broken across the chair (page 19 panel 1). The cook crew cheers (“HOORAY!”, page 18 final panel). Patty’s speech: “If you can’t pay… you ain’t a customer!!” / “You’re no customer!!! So get lost!!!” / “I wouldn’t give yesterday’s rice to a penniless sea wolf like you!!” / “Customers are a restaurant’s life’s blood!!!” (pages 19). The doctrine has its public enforcement; the penniless are expelled with violence.

Page 20: the cook crew bows: “Please! Enjoy your meals!! Dear customers!!” — the dining room resumes as if Gin’s beating were stage entertainment. Luffy sits stunned; Sanji stands silent at frame-left, cigarette in mouth, watching.

Cut (page 20 lower) to a storeroom: Gin lies on the floor, stomach growling (GRRRG / GRRMB / GRR ERRRG!!). The chapter’s emotional pivot: a hand sets a plate of food in front of him. Sanji (page 20 final panels / page 21) sits beside Gin with a cigarette, and the dialogue is the chapter’s thesis: “WUMP…! EAT.” Gin (page 21): “I’m not worthy!!” / Sanji: ”…” Gin eats. “FOOD!” he gasps, devouring. “MUNCH MUNCH… CHOMP MUNCH GULP SLURP.” Gin (mouth full, weeping): “I thought I was a goner!! A dead man for sure!!! Better’n I deserve, certain it is!! …Tasted nothin’ so delicious!!! I never… ever…”

Final beats (page 21): Luffy has been watching from off-frame; the panel shifts to Luffy’s grinning face — “Aha!” / “My cook!” / “I’ve found you!!” Sanji turns, cigarette in mouth, mid-exhale: “Good, eh?” The chapter closes on Sanji’s smile and the implicit handshake — Luffy has decided, before Sanji has any idea, that this is his crew’s cook. • Zeff’s peg leg (page 3, panel 2 — “Chef’s Special — Peg-Leg Kick!!”). First on-page reveal of the head chef’s missing leg replaced with a peg.
