The seed
The Ch. 45 Patty exposition (“Chef Zeff used to cook for a famous pirate. Baratie is the old ratbag’s treasure.”) is the cook-for-a-pirate layer; Ch. 47 escalates the seed to Grand-Line-veteran and epithet-bearing pirate himself.
The payoff
(Pending — predicted Ch. 56-68: flashback to Zeff and a young Sanji stranded on a rock after a shipwreck. Zeff a former pirate captain; eats his own leg to save the starving Sanji. The “Red Shoes” epithet refers to his bloodied boots from that ordeal. The lost leg is the foundation of Zeff’s silent bond with Sanji and the moral source of Sanji’s “if a man is hungry, I feed him” axiom.)
Why this matters
Oda’s sound-first-sight-second reveal grammar (the peg-leg SFX before the visual reveal) recurs across the series (Shanks’s footsteps Ch. 1, Mihawk’s wake Ch. 50, Kaido’s bottle Ch. 920). The Zeff introduction is the first clean instance of the sound-clue-as-foreshadowing technique applied to a disability.
The Zeff arc-establishment in Ch. 47 also calibrates the “retired veteran” character archetype — survived the Grand Line, still alive, still in a lesser sea, running a quiet business — that Oda will reuse for Rayleigh (Sabaody), Crocus (Reverse Mountain), and others. Zeff is the first instance of the template.
