Summary

The chapter opens with a cover story (page 1) — “Buggy’s Crew: After the Battle! Part Seven: ‘The Island of Random Rare Animals’” — Buggy, visible inside the central silhouette wearing his striped shorts, is stranded on an island populated by absurd hybrid creatures. The B-plot continues to track Buggy’s post-Bazooka survival.

The chapter proper opens (page 2) with the Going Merry at sea — seagulls circling, the Straw Hat flag flying. Suddenly a huge fish (later revealed as the Baratie itself) approaches, calling: “BROTHER ZOLO!! BROTHER LUFFY!! BROTHER USOPP!! BROTHER NAMI!! HERE WE ARE!! THE OCEAN-GOING RESTAURANT!!” (page 2). The fish is the Baratie — Oda’s floating-fish-shaped restaurant. The Straw Hats react with awe (“It’s cool!!” / “Wow!” / “What a huge fish!!” — page 3). Nami (the only one composed) asks “What do you think?”

A Marine vessel arrives (page 4) — SLOOM. The Straw Hats freeze (“A navy ship!!” / “Look! Who’s that guy?” / “Hey, we’re not pirates!” / “I hope they don’t blast us.”). The Marine officer descends: Lieutenant ‘Iron-Fist’ Fullbody, Minister of the Navy (page 5, name-card panel). Vertical-striped suit, scarred face, iron-knuckled gauntlet on one hand. “Pirates… unknowns… Who’s the captain? Speak your name.” The Straw Hats answer: “I’m Usopp.” / “Yesterday?!” (Usopp’s response to the “amateurs” gibe) / “We just made our pirate flag yesterday!” / “Luffy, Monkey D.” — all four name themselves, but Luffy’s full-name introduction (“Luffy, Monkey D.” — surname-last, here, the Japanese order) is the chapter’s self-naming-to-Marine beat.

On the Marine deck (page 6), Johnny and Yosaku — two bounty hunters held captive — protest Fullbody’s “two-bit bounty hunters” characterization (“It’s a matter of honor. Let’s make Mr. Navy fancy-pants revise his view of us.”). They attempt to attack Fullbody — one iron-fist punch knocks both unconscious (“DOOOOM” — pages 6-7). “A hair’s breadth from death” (page 7). Fullbody’s lady-companion (Fullbody’s date) intervenes: “Fullbody… quit picking on those sissies, and let’s go.” / “Yes, my dear.” Fullbody warns the bounty hunters: “But beware. When we meet again, you’re dead.” / “It’s your lucky day, pirate scum. It’s my day off. I’ve come to dine.”

Nami notices Johnny’s bounty posters on the deck (page 8) — “What’s this, Johnny?” Johnny: “…pirates and bounties, sister Nami.” Fullbody, in the silhouette: “An ugly business… I get a bounty for every one I kill.” A Marine officer fires the ship’s cannon at the Going Merry (“BOOM” / “Sink it.” / “Aye, sir.”). The Straw Hats panic (“They’re aiming a cannon at us!!! This is bad!!!”). Luffy intervenes (page 9): “GUM-GUM… BALLOON!!!” — inflates his stomach to absorb the cannonball, then deflects it (“BWOING!! Here’s your cannonball!”) — first on-page Gum-Gum Balloon technique. The cannonball arcs back — but misses the Marine ship and crashes into the Baratie (page 10, “KRASH”). Nami: “YOU RETURNED IT TO THE WRONG PLACE, IDIOT!!” Luffy panics; the Baratie’s owner approaches.

Inside the Baratie (page 11), wealthy patrons dine at white-tablecloth tables. A woman in white-dress comments on the freshly-arrived Fullbody (“That man over there!! He’s Lt. Fullbody…” / “Really?! The naval officer?” / “He’s handsome. And elegant.”). A waiter rattles off a parodic-pretentious wine identification (“Lightly acidic, full-bodied, dry… I’m absolutely certain, it’s Ituruit-Subuliga Stein!! / Delightful! From the north, a bouquet… from Mikkyuo.”).

Page 12 — Sanji’s first appearance. Full-body splash panel with name-card caption: “SANJI / Assistant Chef / Baratie Oceangoing Restaurant”. Tall, blond, side-sweep hair covering one eye, cigarette, black double-breasted chef’s suit, holding a tray. He corrects the waiter’s wine identification: “Dead wrong, sir.” / “And I am the assistant chef. All the waiters jumped ship yesterday.” / Delivers a soup: “Your soup. Enjoy it while it’s hot.” Fullbody and his lady react to the wine correction. The lady’s interest in Sanji is immediate: “But he was so sure of himself!” / “Shhh! Don’t laugh.”

The corrected waiter (the man Sanji embarrassed — page 13) confronts Sanji: “What’s going on? I set that up with the owner beforehand!” Sanji bows: “Um, yes, quite true. My palate is just a bit off today…” The lady patron interjects: “About wine. Eh? You know a lot.” Sanji nods. The kitchen comes into view (page 13, lower panels) — “Chef, are you sure you’re all right?” / Sanji: “Of course I’m not all right!! But there’s work to be done!!” / “Are you defying me?!” / “But chef! Your wounds!!” — Sanji is wounded; bandages visible; he’s working despite injury.

Page 14 — Chef Zeff enters. Towering, long-braided mustache, tall pillar-shaped chef’s hat (taller than any other in the series so far), white double-breasted chef coat, wooden peg-leg in place of his right leg. Name-card caption: “CHEF ZEFF / Proprietor / Baratie Oceangoing Restaurant”. Zeff: “Are you boneheads trying to put me out of business?!! A chef must feed his customers.” The kitchen staff cower: “I’m really sorry!!” / “He’s the scoundrel!!” / “We got him, chef!!” — the staff have dragged in Luffy. Luffy sees the peg-leg, panics — “I blew off your foot?!” / “AAAAH!” The kitchen staff/Zeff correct: “Oh, it was already like that…” / “…but you’re hurt all over!!” (page 15). Zeff: “No berries? Then you’ll work off your debt. You’ll work without pay for ONE YEAR!! Then we’ll call it even.” Luffy: “A whole year?!” / Zeff: “I’ll do it.” / Luffy: “Okay.” — Luffy’s punishment is one year of unpaid kitchen labor at the Baratie.

Outside on the Going Merry (page 15, lower panels), Zoro, Nami, and Usopp wait. Usopp: “That honest fool. He should’ve blamed the navy ship.” Zoro: “Maybe they’re making him wash dishes for a month.” Nami: “Wanna check on him? And eat?”

Back inside the Baratie (page 16), Fullbody yells “WAITER!!!” — Sanji approaches the lady (“What a lovely lady.” / “I told you, I’m not a waiter.” — Sanji’s status-distinction). The lady offers Sanji wine (“Care to sample my private stock?” / “How ‘bout it, miss?” / “It’s real wine.”). Fullbody is incensed: “Heh heh. Embarrass me, will you?! I’ll leave your reputation in splinters, with a bug from my private stock!!!” — Fullbody plants a bug in his own soup. He confronts Sanji: “What kind of third-rate dive serves soup with bugs? HEY!!” Sanji approaches (page 17): “What’s this fly doing in my soup?!” Sanji, deadpan: “It’s hard to tell… but it appears to be the back-stroke.” / “Forgive me, sir…” Fullbody loses it and attacks Sanji (page 17, “KRASHKKK”) — slams Sanji against a column. The lady screams (“EEEEK!”).

Pages 18-19 are the chapter’s doctrinal climax for Sanji. Sanji: “You have no idea who you’re toying with.” (page 18) / “…you could’ve eaten that soup, you know.” / Fullbody (off-panel, then on): “What?!” / The kitchen staff appear, terrified: “Let it go!!” / “Stop it, Fullbody!!” — Fullbody: “How dare you take that attitude?! You’re a lowly cook!!” / Fullbody, asserting: “I AM A CUSTOMER!!!” / Sanji, deadpan: “Does money make up for lack of courage?” The kitchen staff beg Sanji to stop (“Sanji! Don’t do it!!! / We gotta stop him!!”). Sanji’s cook-at-sea doctrine and food-must-never-be-wasted doctrine fire together: ”…Fullbody…” / “To offend a cook at sea…” / “…is a fool’s mistake. Remember that. And food must NEVER be wasted.” (page 19). On the last panel, “DOOM!!” — Sanji ends Fullbody with a single punch; Fullbody is silenced (”…!!!”). The composition is a prop-mirror of Fullbody’s own earlier knockout of Johnny/Yosaku (page 7): Sanji ends Fullbody with the same finishing-strike composition Fullbody used at the chapter’s start.

Page 20 is the SBS Question Corner — five short Q&As: (1) the manga is titled “ONE PIECE” (pronounced wan peesu), not “NEP ECE”; (2) “Möwe” on Morgan’s chin is German for “seagull” — pronounced mee-Be — because Morgan is a seaman; (3) Zoro’s three-sword-style mouth-talk is not ventriloquism — Oda answers “Fine spirit.” (gag deflection); (4) Oda’s no-screentone policy is intentional aesthetic principle.

New reveals

• Chapter title is “Sanji” (page 1) — first chapter titled after a future Straw Hat who has not yet appeared on-page. The title-as-pre-introduction pattern. Compare Ch. 22 “The Past” for Nami (titled-after-the-character-arc-grammar, not the character’s name) — Ch. 43 is the first chapter titled simply with a future-crewmate’s name, anticipating Ch. 50+ chapter-titles that name new arc characters before their reveal.
• The Baratie is introduced (pages 2-3) — a floating fish-shaped ocean-going restaurant. The vessel is architecturally novel — a building on water, not a conventional ship. The fish-shape (with open mouth as bow) is the first major themed-vessel in East Blue and anticipates the themed-ship pattern that runs through the series (Going Merry/Thousand Sunny figureheads, Big Mom’s Queen Mama Chanter, Kaido’s domed ship, etc.).
• Lieutenant ‘Iron-Fist’ Fullbody (page 5) — first appearance. Marine officer in striped suit, scarred face, iron-knuckled gauntlet. Epithet-before-name naming pattern (cf. ‘Axe-Hand’ Morgan). On a date with a fashionable lady. Speaks to pirates with the name-yourself-to-the-officer convention.
• Johnny and Yosaku (page 6) — first appearance. Two bounty hunters held captive on Fullbody’s ship. Knocked unconscious by a single Fullbody punch. The bounty-hunter-introduction-by-failure beat — they will reappear later as recurring side characters and as the introducers of Nami’s tangerine-village backstory.
• First on-page ‘Gum-Gum Balloon’ (page 9) — Luffy’s first use of the stomach-inflation-deflection technique. Recurs throughout the series. The Gum-Gum technique tree continues to expand chapter-by-chapter.
• The deflected-cannonball-misses-the-deflector beat (page 10) — Luffy returns the cannonball but it hits the Baratie’s roof, not the Marine ship. The unintended-target-of-deflection is the structural cause of Luffy’s recruitment-arc geography: Luffy must work at the Baratie for one year as restitution, which delivers him to Sanji. Recruitment-arc grammar: an accident (not a deliberate visit) is the entry into the arc.
• Sanji (page 12) — first appearance. Assistant chef at the Baratie. Tall, blond side-sweep covering one eye, cigarette, black double-breasted chef’s suit. Wounded (bandages visible on page 13). His chivalry-toward-women is on-page in his first scene (page 16 — “What a lovely lady”). His deadpan wit is on-page in his first scene (page 17 — “the back-stroke”). His combat ability is on-page in his first scene (page 19 — single-punch K.O. of a Marine lieutenant). Sanji’s character thesis is fully visible in his first chapter.
• Chef Zeff (page 14) — first appearance. Proprietor of the Baratie. Towering, pillar-hat, long-braided mustache, wooden peg-leg. The peg-leg is not explained on-page; future-reveal-setup for the Sanji/Zeff backstory. The chef-at-sea ethic is voiced first by Zeff (“A chef must feed his customers” — page 14), then articulated in the Sanji/Fullbody scene (“To offend a cook at sea…” — page 19). The cook-at-sea doctrine is master-then-disciple grammar — Zeff is established as Sanji’s master before the backstory is told.
• The ‘cook at sea’ doctrine (page 19) — Sanji’s “To offend a cook at sea… is a fool’s mistake.” The sea-cook-as-sacred-vocation is articulated here for the first time. The doctrine recurs throughout the Baratie arc and is the thematic spine of Sanji’s character. The doctrine is aesthetic-and-moral — it’s not just about food quality but about the role of the cook in maritime survival.
• The ‘food must never be wasted’ doctrine (page 19) — Sanji’s “food must NEVER be wasted.” The waste-as-mortal-sin axiom. Pattern marker for the Baratie arc’s eventual Zeff/Sanji backstory reveal (Ch. 56-58, the starvation-on-the-rock).
• The ‘I am a customer!!!’ / ‘Does money make up for lack of courage?’ exchange (page 18) — Sanji’s rejection of the customer-as-sovereign axiom. The cook is not a servant of the patron; the patron’s status as customer does not override the cook’s authority over the food. First on-page articulation of the cook-as-vocational-equal doctrine that recurs across Sanji’s character.
• Fullbody is defeated by Sanji (page 19) — a single-punch K.O. that mirrors Fullbody’s earlier knockout of Johnny/Yosaku. Sanji defeats a Marine lieutenant in his first chapter with the same finishing-strike composition. The chivalry-cook is also a combat-capable fighter. Inflates the Sanji character thesis to its fully-loaded form within one chapter.
• The Baratie’s tonal register — high-society, wealthy patrons, parodic-pretentious wine identification (page 11). The Baratie is socioeconomically coded as a luxury establishment, in deliberate contrast to the rough-pirate ocean culture of prior arcs. The class-coding will recur later (CP9, World Nobles, etc.) as a series-wide social-stratification beat.
• SBS Vol. 5 / Chapter 43 Question Corner (page 20) — five short Q&As. Möwe = German for seagull is the marquee reveal (Morgan’s chin-plate text decoded). The Zipatone-policy answer locks Oda’s B&W-no-screentone aesthetic as stated authorial doctrine. The “NEP ECE” exchange resolves any pronunciation ambiguity for the series title.

Open questions raised

• What happened to Sanji? — He is wounded on his first appearance (page 13). The off-page incident is unexplained. Forward-question: what fight left Sanji injured before Ch. 43? (May resolve in Ch. 44+ or in flashback.)
• What happened to Zeff’s leg? — The peg-leg is unexplained on-page (page 14). The future-reveal will be the Sanji/Zeff backstory (Ch. 56-58, the starvation-on-the-rock — Oda eventually reveals Zeff ate his own leg to feed young Sanji). Forward-question is set up here.
• Why did all the waiters jump ship? — Sanji: “All the waiters jumped ship yesterday.” (page 12). The mass-departure of the Baratie’s waitstaff is unexplained. Inference: related to the wounds Sanji is carrying — possibly a recent pirate raid or fight that scared off the staff. Forward-question.
• What’s the Baratie’s history? — How did a fish-shaped restaurant end up on the open sea? Who built it? Why does Zeff own it? Forward-question; partial resolution comes with the Zeff backstory.
• Will Luffy serve the full year? — Zeff has sentenced Luffy to one year of unpaid labor (page 15). The recruitment-arc grammar suggests Luffy will be redirected by an arc-event before the year is up. Forward-question for the next several chapters.
• Who is Sanji’s future role on Luffy’s crew? — Recruitment-pattern Theory A: the signature feat in the recruit’s first chapter predicts crew role. Sanji’s first-chapter signature feat is a cook defending the kitchen with his fists — he will be the fighter-cook. Forward-prediction.
