Profile

Big Mom’s Devil Fruit — named on-page for the first time Ch. 835 (p. 15), though its power had been demonstrated earlier (the lifespan-theft “treat or life” that killed Charlotte Moscato Ch. 829; the Homies Ch. 827). A Paramecia that lets the user extract and manipulate human souls / lifespan: she takes a fraction of her subjects’ lifespan (the Totto Land toll) and pours “pure soul” into objects, plants, and animals to bring them to life as Homies. She “can manipulate people’s souls as she wills,” but cannot put souls into corpses or other living people. The Seducing Woods/Mirror-World forest homies and Chocolat Town’s living oddities are products of this power.

Sibling of her beam form “Maser Cannon” (轟光砲, “Roaring Light Cannon”, Ch. 1013); “Saber” = the blade form she wields via the sword-homie Napoleon.Ch. 1039 (p. 6)Big Mom

Etymology: the “3,000 Leagues” (三千里 sanzenri) + “Mother(‘s) Visit” framing references the classic Japanese anime “3000 Leagues in Search of Mother” (母をたずねて三千里 Haha o Tazunete Sanzenri, World Masterpiece Theater, 1976) — pointedly fitting for Big Mom (“Mama”). The homie’s name reads 三千里 not as sanzenri but with an alternate reading ミザリー Mizarī = “Misery”, layering misery onto the “3,000 leagues” pun. (Source: One Piece Wiki etymology. Power limits & weaknesses

  • Standard Devil-Fruit sea/sea-prism immobilization.
  • Cannot instill souls into corpses or into other living people (stated Ch. 835).

Lore & theories

VIZ on-page caption renders the name “Soul-Soul Fruit”; the Soru Soru no Mi romaji follows the folder convention. The fruit is the engine of Totto Land’s homie fabric and of Big Mom’s lifespan-tribute regime. Etymology flag : “soru” ← soul. Wano-finale technique etymology (Ch. 1039):Maser Saber/Cannon” (轟光剣/砲, “Roaring Light Sword/Cannon”) = the real maser device (microwave cousin of the laser) + the Godzilla-franchise Maser Cannon; “3,000 Leagues of Misery” (母を訪ねて三千里, homie Mizarī) puns on the anime “3000 Leagues in Search of Mother” — pointed for “Big Mom” — with 三千里 sanzenri re-read as ミザリー “Misery.” Sources: Misery — One Piece Wiki, Soru Soru no Mi — One Piece Wiki.
