Sanji Recruitment Bargain Setup

What’s installed
- The chore-boy status is the obstacle to recruitment — Sanji’s continued stay at the Baratie is imposed by Zeff (in the chore-boy role), not chosen by Sanji. The Sanji Stays For A Reason mystery is inverted by this line.
- The Krieg-reinforcement fight is the bargaining chip — defeating the locusts is what Sanji is offering in exchange for release.
- Zeff’s verbal agreement to the bargain — “What? That’s a deal!” — Zeff has on-page accepted the terms. The bargain is negotiable from the chore-boy side.
- The Sanji-recruitment arc is launched in this panel — the recruitment-grammar has its trigger.
The payoff
- Krieg-arc resolution (Ch. ~67-68) — Sanji defeats Krieg’s reinforcements (or contributes substantially); Zeff honors the bargain; Sanji joins the Straw Hats.
- Zeff-Sanji flashback (Ch. 57-58) — the why-Sanji-stayed mystery is fully resolved (the Zeff-cooked-for-Sanji starvation-flashback); the what-Zeff-holds-over-Sanji sub-question gets a gratitude-debt answer rather than a coercion answer.
Why this matters
The Sanji-recruitment-bargain is structurally inverted from every prior Straw-Hat recruitment:
- Zoro — bargained for swords-return (Ch. 4); the captain offered the recruit’s-own-treasure as recruitment-leverage.
- Nami — bargained for Buggy-map (Ch. 8); the recruit offered cooperation-on-a-shared-goal as conditional alliance.
- Usopp — bargained for Klahadore-defeat (Ch. 27-40); the recruit offered village-protection as recruitment-leverage.
- Sanji — bargains for chore-boy-release (Ch. 52); the recruit offers Krieg-defense in exchange for release-from-his-current-obligation.
The Sanji bargain is the first recruitment where the recruit is bargaining to leave a current obligation rather than bargaining around a captain-offered task. The recruitment-grammar’s structural variant: bargain-with-the-existing-master — Sanji’s existing master (Zeff) is the gate, not the captain.
