Chapter 1176: With Pride

Summary

Elbaf burns. A colossal fire — and a fire-breathing dragon “bigger than Kaido” that the giants glimpse Luffy riding — rage over the capital while the school and Owl Library are set alight. Nami and Zeus douse the library-and-school fire with a “Tempo” downpour, but the blaze is a controlled thing: a Celestial-Dragon-voiced enemy demands “who said you were allowed to put out the fire?!” and rekindles it, and a nightmare-monster “sleeptid” shaped like a giant Lindworm (one of a child’s drawn fears) swallows Zeus whole and is ordered to “devour the library.” Lilith answers with Vegapunk science: her Omni-Drain Converters (ODC) drain the fire’s heat energy and freeze the blaze out, saving the library and school, while she hands Franky “Super Vega Cola” and reveals his cyborg innards are Pacifista-grade. Jinbei, Sanji, and a Super-Vega-Cola-boosted Franky pummel the Lindworm to force it to disgorge Zeus, after Jinbei is sneered at as a “fish-man” by a mask-wearing Celestial Dragon; Robin begs Saul to rush her to the library, where the world history Ohara left behind is the enemy’s true target (“only when history is ended can the new world come about”). At the Western Village, the demon-transformed Giant Pirates — Dorry and Brogy among them — battle the warriors Stansen, Hajrudin, Jarul, and Zoro. Still aware within their demon shells, Dorry and Brogy refuse to slay a comrade and instead cut each other down together, “with pride” — only to revive fully healed. The giants realize the demons revert to normal only under fatal damage: “if they die, they stop being demons.” Grinning through their grief, the Western Village warriors ready themselves to give their beloved captains the killing blow. New reveals

• The Omni-Drain Converters (ODC) — Lilith’s Vegapunk devices, left “right here by the school” (the box “Vegapunk was in”). She explains energy is “everywhere, all around us”; “all natural disasters are a maelstrom of energy.” The flying discs “collect heat energy” from the fire and, draining it, freeze the entire blaze solid — putting out the library-and-school fire (p.3, p.8-9).
• Super Vega Cola — Lilith gives Franky a new fuel: “have you ever run off a more potent fuel than cola?… fuel is passion!!” She reveals Franky’s innards are “immaculately designed — just as advanced as the Pacifistas,” and was “stunned to learn you only use cola to power yourself” (p.9). Boosted, Franky’s “muscles are screamin’” (p.11).
• Sleeptid = the Lindworm — Killingham’s nightmare-manifestation here takes the shape of a giant serpentine Lindworm (title-card “What I’m Afraid Of: LINDWORM,” a child’s drawn fear); it eats Zeus and is commanded “devour the library, Sleeptid!!” It is asked if it is “one of the three demons” (p.7-10).
• The enemy’s motive is history-erasure — the Celestial-Dragon-voiced controller: “you promised to cast aside… the history of the world,” “only when history is ended can the new world come about!!” and orders the library (holding “the world history Ohara left behind”) burned (p.6, p.10).
• The demon-transformation’s rule — the demonized giants revive fully healed from any wound (“even the most mangled corpse… is the picture of health when you flip it over”); the ONLY way to break the curse is fatal damage: “if they die, they stop being demons.” (p.17-19).
