The question

Captain Koby, “the Hero of the Rocky Port Incident,” is kidnapped by the Blackbeard Pirates at the close of the Amazon Lily siege; his whereabouts and fate are unknown. Blackbeard references a prior debt to Koby from the Rocky Port Incident. Why does Blackbeard want Koby, where is he being held, and will the Navy / SWORD mount a rescue?

Open questions

  • Why does Blackbeard want Koby specifically — leverage, the Rocky Port debt, or his Observation-Haki talent? Answered Ch. 1080: as a hero-hostage to leverage WG recognition of a “Blackbeard Kingdom.”
  • Where is Koby being held, and in what condition? Answered Ch. 1080: held at Fullalead (Pirate Island), captive but able to stage a breakout.
  • Will the Marines / SWORD (SWORD) move to rescue him? Answered Ch. 1080: yes — three SWORD officers (Prince Grus, Hibari, Kujaku) raid the port and Vice Admiral Garp arrives with a sky-dropped battleship + Galaxy Impact.
  • Does Garp survive Shiryu’s blade, and does any rescuer escape Pizarro’s island-hand with Koby? Answered Ch. 1088: the rescue succeeds — Koby (with his “Impact” punch splitting Pizarro’s island-arm) and the squad escape with Garp’s “Iron Garp” surviving the @1087 blade; the newspaper confirms Koby’s “safe return.” Garp’s own fate is deferred to a new thread — he stays to face Blackbeard alone and officially “disappears.” See Garp’s Disappearance at Fullalead.

Notes

The SWORD rescue push surfaces forward (~1061).

Resolution

Resolved @ Ch. 1088 — the Blackbeard Pirates took Koby as a hero-hostage to pressure the World Government into recognizing a “Blackbeard Kingdom,” held him at Fullalead, and Garp’s SWORD/Marine squad rescued him — at the cost of Garp staying behind.

  • Ch. 1059 the Blackbeard Pirates abduct Captain Koby at the close of the Amazon Lily siege, Blackbeard citing a debt from the Rocky Port Incident.
  • Ch. 1080 Koby is confirmed held at Fullalead; Blackbeard wants him alive as a hero-hostage to leverage recognition of a “Blackbeard Kingdom,” while SWORD officers raid the port and Vice Admiral Garp drops a battleship with Galaxy Impact.
  • Ch. 1081 the rescue is blocked by Kuzan, the Blackbeard Pirates’ Tenth Ship Captain.
  • Ch. 1087 the rescue springs a trap: the invisible Shiryu runs Garp through and Avalo Pizarro’s Isle-Isle Fruit warps the island into a giant hand to crush the fleeing ship.
  • Ch. 1088 the rescue succeeds — Koby, splitting Pizarro’s island-arm with Garp’s signature “Impact” punch, escapes with the squad; the newspaper confirms “the safe return of the Navy’s young hero, Captain Koby.”

Garp’s own fate — he stayed behind to face Blackbeard alone and officially “disappeared” — is tracked forward in Garp’s Disappearance at Fullalead.
