The question
After successfully freeing Koby, Garp orders his SWORD/Marine squad to flee Fullalead at full speed and stays behind to face Blackbeard one-on-one (“I’ll manage on my own!!”, p. 18). The chapter cuts away before the clash; the next day’s newspaper reports only the legendary hero’s “disappearance” on Pirate Island (p. 19). His fate — and whether Kuzan participates against his old comrade — is deliberately concealed.
Leading theories
Theory A — captured by Blackbeard
- Claim: Garp is taken prisoner by the Blackbeard Pirates (consistent with his Profile’s forward note that he is “held captive as of late Elbaf”).
- Evidence leans on:
[[Chapters/1088]](the “disappearance” framing; Blackbeard emerging to face him alone). - Confidence: medium
- CONFIRMED Ch. 1126 — Garp alive, captive of the Blackbeard Pirates; Kuzan took him down.
Theory B — killed or fell at Pirate Island
- Claim: Garp is killed facing Blackbeard (the “disappearance” word concealing a death).
- Evidence leans on:
[[Chapters/1088]](the deliberate cutaway). - Confidence: low
Theory C — escaped under his own power
- Claim: “Iron Garp,” already surviving Shiryu’s blade @1087, slips away on his own.
- Evidence leans on:
[[Chapters/1088]](“I’ll manage on my own!!”). - Confidence: low
Open questions
Did Garp survive the encounter? Was he taken prisoner, killed, or did he slip away?Answered Ch. 1126: he survived — alive but a captive of the Blackbeard Pirates, shown in chains. What role does Kuzan play against his old comrade Garp?Answered Ch. 1126: Kuzan is the one who brought Garp down — “it took all of us together, and we just barely managed.”Is the “disappearance” a WG/newspaper euphemism, and for what?Answered Ch. 1126: yes — a Marine/WG cover for his capture by the Blackbeard Pirates.- Still open: does Garp escape or get rescued from Blackbeard’s captivity?
Notes
Garp stays to face Blackbeard alone → “disappearance” cliffhanger; Kuzan present on Blackbeard’s side. Forward content (the actual clash / Garp’s later captivity) is GUARDED.
Resolution
Resolved @ Ch. 1126 — Garp survived his stand at Fullalead: he is alive but a captive of the Blackbeard Pirates, and it was Kuzan who brought him down.
- Ch. 1088 Garp orders his squad to flee with the rescued Koby and stays behind alone to face Blackbeard; the next day’s newspaper reports only the hero’s “disappearance” on Pirate Island.
- Ch. 1126 Kuzan confirms he fought Garp at Fullalead — “I thought I killed him… but he ended up alive instead” — and the crew “caught Garp instead.”
- Garp is shown alive and in chains, a prisoner of the Blackbeard Pirates; taking him down took “all of us together, and we just barely managed.”
- The “disappearance” framing resolves as a Marine/World Government cover for his capture.
Still open: whether Garp escapes or is rescued from Blackbeard’s captivity.
