The community claim: Marshall D. “Blackbeard” Teach is not a single ordinary person but a Cerberus-like triune being — three souls or hearts in one abnormal body — which is why he alone can hold and wield multiple Devil Fruits (Yami Yami no Mi + Gura Gura no Mi, with a third to come) without the fatal “two-fruit” toll that kills a normal human.

The reading began around 2008 on the Arlong Park forums as a “three skulls / not one person” body-oddity theory. The 2010 Marineford reveal — Teach wielding two fruits at once (Ch. 577) — supercharged it, and the marquee “Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Cerberus = three souls hosting three fruits” packaging then spread across Reddit r/OnePiece, YouTube breakdowns (Tekking101), Worstgen, and the One Piece Fandom forums, where it stood as the leading explanation for over a decade. Ch. 1138 (2025) reassigned the on-panel Cerberus to Figarland Shamrock’s living sword, pushing the fandom toward the “multiple ancestral souls (Rocks / Davy)” variant.

The steelman

One Piece establishes an iron rule — a person who eats a second Devil Fruit is torn apart and dies (Lucci recounts it as a “rumor” in Ch. 385; the Vol. 38 SBS canonizes “one bite = one user”) — yet Blackbeard demonstrably wields two fruits at once at Marineford (Ch. 576–Ch. 579). The manga never treats this as a generic cheat: the Marines say it’s impossible “for normal humans… but Teech isn’t normal — his body is odd” (Ch. 577), the Five Elders call it unprecedented in history (Ch. 594), Van Augur ties it to his “special bloodline” (Ch. 1107), and later chapters reveal him as the son of Rocks D. Xebec and a scion of the Davy line (Ch. 1162–Ch. 1164).

Around this on-page abnormality the fandom built the “triune body” reading: the anomaly must be a property of Blackbeard’s very being, not an acquired trick. The steelman marshals a dense triple-motif Chekhov set as circumstantial support — the unique three-skull Jolly Roger, three flintlocks, three missing teeth, three knots in his beard, the three scars he gave Shanks — plus the “never had to sleep in his life” characterization (read as multiple consciousnesses taking shifts). The strongest honest version is not “he literally ate a Cerberus fruit” but “Blackbeard is a fundamentally abnormal, more-than-one-normal-human being, and that abnormal body and lineage is the mechanism that lets him break the multi-fruit rule.” The literal Cerberus-Zoan sub-version was the flashiest packaging of this idea for over a decade, elegantly matching the three-skull flag to a three-headed hellhound.
