Chapter 62: MH5

New reveals

• Gin’s “This one person, I cannot kill!!!” (page 3) — first explicit on-page refusal of Krieg’s direct order. The Ch. 60 Gin Order To Kill Sanji Loyalty Test contract-installation now contract-breaks — but in an unexpected form: Gin refuses the kill while affirming continued loyalty (“I’m sorry, I would never betray you” + “This one person, I cannot kill”). The grammar is debt-of-gratitude-as-narrowest-possible-exception — Gin refuses one kill, claims he is not a traitor in any other respect. The doctrinal pose: the captain’s order is law except where the law conflicts with the life-debt.
• Gin’s rank canonized as “Battle Commander of the Pirate Armada” (page 2: “I named you Battle Commander of my pirate armada”). Gin’s rank is higher than the Ch. 45 Pirate-at-Arms caption-card label — Battle Commander of the armada implies fleet-wide second-in-command, not just one-ship lieutenant. This recasts Pearl’s Ch. 60 page-3 “battle commander” mention (Sanji’s commentary) as either a general descriptor for an officer-in-command-of-battle or a sub-rank (battle commander of a particular ship). Krieg-Pirates’ officer hierarchy now reads: Captain (Krieg) → Battle Commander of the Armada (Gin) → other Battle Commanders / unit commanders (Pearl was Second Unit Commander per Ch. 54). The Ch. 45 Pirate-at-Arms card was an under-translation of Battle Commander.
• Krieg disowns Gin from the crew on-page (page 6: “You are no longer part of this crew”). The Ch. 49 terror-loyalty axiom (shoot-the-coward) escalates here: Krieg disowns his most loyal officer. The Krieg crewmen explicitly register this as a break with even Krieg-Pirates norms (page 6: “You’re addled!! He wouldn’t go that far!!” / “The Don’s gonna kill Gin!!”). Krieg’s terror-loyalty axiom has a new edge: even maximum-loyalty does not exempt you from execution if you petition for one mercy. Forward-payoff: the Krieg-crew’s internal terror-discipline is now visibly fragile — multiple crewmen voicing protest in the same chapter where Gin is being executed.
• Gin’s backstory: he served as Krieg’s body-double / decoy (page 7 flashback). “Commander Gin disguised himself as the Don, and acted as a decoy!” When the Krieg flagship was being pursued by Ironfist Fullbody’s Marine squadron after escape from the Grand Line, Gin disguised himself as Krieg to draw enemy fire. This canonizes:
  • First Krieg-Pirates backstory in flashback (not just description).
  • Gin’s bond to Krieg is operational, not just hierarchical — he has physically substituted himself for Krieg in combat, the most extreme loyalty-act short of dying for him.

• The MH5 Poison-Gas Cannonball is deployed for real (pages 12-15). The Ch. 60 trick-decoy register is inverted here: Krieg loads and fires the actual MH5, with full visual confirmation (“MH5!!! DEATHLY POISON GAS BOMB!!! KABOOM!!!” page 12; “KA-FWOOSHHH” page 15). The gas covers the entire Baratie ship for ~5 minutes (page 17: “It’s been five minutes now”). The weapon is operationally demonstrated as a ship-scale chemical-attack — but does not kill any named character (Sanji is saved by Gin’s mask; Luffy by a stray mask on the deck; cooks survived by retreating inside; the Krieg crew jumped into the water). The MH5’s village-annihilation boast (Ch. 60 page 14) remains forward-canon; the chapter has only ship-scale on-page proof.
• Gin saves Sanji by transferring his own gas mask (pages 16-18). The chapter’s emotional pivot. Gin chooses self-poisoning over allowing Sanji to die. The Ch. 60 Sanji Save-Then-Kill Aimed At Gin mutual-apology duel-contract is broken from Gin’s side first — not by refusing-to-kill alone but by actively-dying-to-save. The arc-grammar: the mercy-recipient repays by re-routing the lethal weapon onto himself.
