What we know

The MH5 Poison-Gas Cannonball is a numbered-series poison-gas cannon-round owned by Don Krieg and shown on-page in Ch. 60. The model-number naming (MH5) implies a numbered series — MH1, MH2, MH3, MH4 should exist or have existed.

Capability (per Krieg’s on-page gloss):

Operational signature: the Krieg-Pirates fear their own captain’s weapon. On Ch. 60 page 8 the crew begs “P-please, Don Krieg, not that!!!” when Krieg lifts the round; on page 11 the crew dives off their own ship for the water (“DANGER! DIVE DEEP!!!”) when the cannon is fired. The deployer’s own crew is in the blast-radius.

Ch. 60 actual use: Krieg loaded the MH5 cannon but fired a shuriken-bomb decoy instead, leveraging the crew’s terror as cover for the trick-shot at Luffy. Krieg’s logic (page 14): “You don’t use something as valuable as the poison-gas cannonball for this!”

Ch. 62 actual use (Ch. 62 pages 11-15): Krieg fired the actual MH5 at the Baratie when the target became valuable (his disowned Battle Commander Gin). Full-page splash (page 15, “KA-FWOOSHHH!!!”). The gas covered the Baratie for ~5 minutes (page 17). Lethal to unmasked targets within blast radius. Survivors: Sanji (saved by Gin’s mask), Luffy (saved by stray mask), Gin (saved by his own mask, then collapsed after handing it to Sanji), Krieg-crew (saved by training: gas masks + “DIVE DEEP!!” drill).

  • Dispersal time: ~5 minutes (Ch. 62 page 17).
  • Vector: cannon-projectile gas-cloud, ship-engulfing on detonation.
  • Deployer immunity: via PPE (gas masks), not biological resistance — all Krieg crew use masks.
  • Crew doctrine: “DIVE DEEP!!” (jump overboard) is the secondary survival measure for unmasked crew (Ch. 62 page 13).
  • First on-page deployment target: the Baratie (a multi-story restaurant-ship), to execute Gin (the disowned Battle Commander).

Significance

  • The MH5 is the first on-page WMD-tier weapon in the series.
  • Establishes the WMD-axis as a structural grammar — weapons that scale beyond personal combat into civilian-genocide.
  • Pre-loads later WMD reveals: Caesar Clown’s Shinokuni (Punk Hazard, Ch. 660s+), Mother Flame (Levely-era), Ancient Weapons (Pluton/Poseidon/Uranus).
  • Establishes the deployer-also-feared WMD doctrine — the same weapon scares both target and operator.

Status as of Ch. 62

Named (Ch. 60) and deployed at ship-scale (Ch. 62 pages 11-15). The Baratie covered for ~5 minutes (page 17). Lethal to unmasked targets within blast radius. The village-annihilation boast (Ch. 60 page 14) remains unverified — the on-page gas killed no named character due to mask availability and rapid dispersal. The MH5 is operationally routine for the Krieg crew (they have masks; they have a “DIVE DEEP!!” dispersal-drill on page 13).
