The seed

Why it matters

Gin’s introduction is structurally the Baratie-arc inciting incident — a Krieg-Pirates officer encounters a future Straw Hat first, before the captain arrives, and unwittingly directs the arc-villain to the location.

Pattern-cross: Buchi/Sham preceded Klahadore; Cabaji/Mohji preceded Buggy; Gin now precedes Krieg. The minor-officer-encounter-as-inciting-incident arc-grammar is established.

Forward-payoff:

• Gin returns to Krieg with the Baratie’s location; Krieg’s crew arrives in subsequent chapters.
• Gin refuses to kill Sanji on Krieg’s order (arc climax), repaying the silent feeding scene.
• The chapter is planting Gin as the moral-conscience character who will sabotage his own captain. The gratitude-out-of-proportion-to-the-favor register on page 21 (‘I’m not worthy!!’ / ‘Tasted nothin’ so delicious!!! I never… ever…’) is load-bearing for the later moral pivot.

The chapter is the first beat of a two-beat structure: (a) Sanji feeds Gin silently → (b) Gin refuses to kill Sanji. Each beat is the structural inverse of the other; both are silent acts of mercy against the captain’s order.
