- name-before-face — Oda’s signature intro structure. Used for: Whitebeard, Mihawk, Crocodile, Kaido, Big Mom, Garp, Sengoku, Dragon, every Yonko-tier figure.
- prop-tell — Zoro’s “demonic beast” framing previews the Asura / King-of-Hell / Enma visual material decades later.
Why this matters
This is the first instance of the pattern. Every future “we hear about them before we see them” introduction (especially every Emperor-tier character) follows this template. Useful as a structural marker when scanning new chapters: if a character is named-but-not-shown, expect them on-page within 1-5 chapters.
Continued evidence
Ch. 12 page 18 — Mohji, dispatched to hunt the escaped Straw Hats, names Zolo as his target (“Now tell me where Roronoa Zolo is”) — not Luffy. Even as a chapter-12 First-Mate-tier antagonist, Mohji frames Zolo’s bounty as the more valuable kill. The name-precedes-face pattern recurs into arcs after Zolo’s introduction — the reputation Oda established in Ch. 2 stays load-bearing chapters and arcs later.
