Wapol Returns To Drum Island Cliffhanger

The seed
Ch. 150 pp. 2-4 — partial payoff: Wapol returns to a castle that is no longer his
Wapol’s party reaches Drum Castle and finds it abandoned (“WAPOL’S… GONE!!! …GONE!!!” , p. 2; “Is this my Drum Castle!? What happened!!?” , p. 4). The Ch. 134-135 Wapol returns to reclaim Drum cliffhanger is structurally cashed: the return lands, the reclaim fails by anti-climax. The kingdom did not wait for him — only Kureha, Chopper, and the recovering Nami remain in the castle. Pre-loads the arc-thesis (Wapol’s kingdom is a hollow projection; the country belongs to its people).
Ch. 148 pp. 5-17 —
Arc-climax payoff: Wapol asserting tyrant-rule at Drum Castle itself
Wapol is now physically back at Drum Castle and asserting tyrant-rule (shooting down the pirate flag, calling himself the king , declaring the kingdom his). The cliffhanger of Wapol returning to reclaim Drum Island is fully cashed: he is at the castle, on his throne in spirit if not yet formally crowned. The arc-climax — Luffy defeating Wapol and restoring the kingdom — is now joined.
Ch. 139 pp. 6-7 — Wapol’s vassal-network openly re-activates
In Big Horn, Wapol’s pre-coup officials drop the survivor-villager cover and re-don their uniforms, openly declaring themselves “King Wapol’s vassals” and coercing the civilians (“To defy him is death!!!” ). The Ch. 134 Wapol Returns cliffhanger is now operative on-the-ground: the regime is restoring itself village-by-village. See Wapol Vassal-Loyalty Reactivation On Return .
Ch. 136 pp. 5-7 —
Wapol’s return is now operationally complete
Wapol’s march on Bighorn cashes the Ch. 134-135 return-cliffhanger in full: he is inside the kingdom, eating it (p. 5 — “Everything in this country is my candy!!” ), confronted on-page by Dalton with intent to kill (pp. 7-8). The cliffhanger that landed the deposed king on Drum is now the active bad-king-vs-people conflict.
Ch. 138 pp. 2-9 —
the Wapol-vs-Straw-Hats collision is staged on-page; pursuit is cut off by the Lapin pack
Wapol on Robson catches the Straw Hats on the Drum mountainside and decrees their execution (“Anyone who ignores the king, dies!” / “Start by killing the two who ignored me the most — the sick one and the injured one!!!” ). Chess fires arrow-volleys (Checkmate!!! ) and Kuromarimo debuts his Snow Powder Makeup pom-pom technique. Luffy throws one contemptuous punch at Wapol (WHUP!! ) — honoring Sanji’s no-combat-around-Nami rule — and runs. The pursuit is cut off (pp. 8-10) by a Lapin pack that protects the Straw Hats. The Ch. 135 cliffhanger is operationally cashed at the level of Wapol meets the Straw Hats again — but the political Wapol-reclaims-the-castle thread remains live (Wapol does not reach the summit this chapter; Luffy does, with Nami on his back).
Ch. 137 p. 14, p. 18 — Wapol in Bighorn → Wapol fleeing, Luffy gives chase
The Ch. 135 cliffhanger continues to land. Wapol’s party is now on-the-ground in Bighorn (p. 14) — but instead of executing the kill-order on the Straw Hats, they are forced to flee from the avalanche on Robson’s serious mode mount. Wapol’s officers refuse to take villagers on their mount (“Silence!!! Fend for yourselves” ) — first on-page on-screen Wapol-abandons-his-people moment. Luffy spots the retreating party at chapter’s end and declares “I’ll beat them to death!!” (p. 18) — the previously-set-up collision is now Luffy-personal and active-pursuit.
At the chapter’s end, Wapol’s pirate ship returns to Drum Island. Crewman Chess at the
rigging with binoculars: “No, Captain Wapol, but… it’s our homeland!!! It’s Drum
Island!!!!” Wapol: “How many long, hard months has it been? We’ve finally come home!”
The ship lands (DOOM!! ).
Ch. 135 pp. 11-17 —
the Ch. 134 cliffhanger pays off on-page
Wapol’s submersible warship surfaces and his crew crashes the Drum coastline, killing the
guards. Wapol declares “I’m no longer a pirate!! I am a king once again!! …My dear
castle!!!” and orders his officers — “Those Straw Hats are in my kingdom!!? …Kill them
all!!!” . The chapter ends with villagers begging Dalton for protection: “A submersible
ship suddenly appeared out of the sea and its crew killed everybody!! …He’s back!!!!
WAPOL!” . The Ch. 134 ship-landing cliffhanger is now operationally cashed: the deposed
tyrant is ashore and moving on the throne. (The Ch. 135 reader proposed a separate

The payoff
Why this matters
The exact event the Drum citizens fear most (seeded pp. 5-6 — see
Drum Island Restoration Of Monarchy Most Feared Doctrine ) is now
underway. The cross-cut structure — citizens articulate the dread / Wapol arrives — is the
engine of the Drum arc’s central conflict: the two threads (Wapol reclaiming the kingdom;
the Straw Hats racing for a doctor for Nami) will collide for the rest of the arc. This is
the Ch. 134 chapter-end cliffhanger and the first full-character appearance of crewman
Chess in his lookout role.
Ch. 135 — the cliffhanger pays off and the collision is locked. Ch. 135 is the on-page
arrival: Wapol lands, declares himself king again, and explicitly orders his officers to
kill the Straw Hats over a prior off-page grudge (“I won’t forget what they did to me!!
How I suffered!!!” ). That grudge confirms the Ch. 133 recognition-shock seed (the crew’s
“I REMEMBER NOW!!!” ) — the two parties have crossed paths before. With Wapol’s officers
tracking the crew’s footprints toward Bighorn and the Straw Hats climbing the same mountain
for the doctor, the deposed-tyrant-vs-rescue-mission collision is now structurally locked.
