Lapin is French for rabbit — the naming pun, an instance of Oda’s name-etymology
grammar. The Lapins are seeded here as the endemic mountain-predator hazard between the
Straw Hats and the doctor, pre-loading them as an arc obstacle on the climb to Kureha’s
castle. They are part of the Grand-Line every island has unique fauna world-building axis
(cf. Grand Line Four-Island-Type Climate System and the Little Garden
dinosaur ecology). Note the existing companion note

Ch. 135 — arc-opening environmental gatekeeper. Ch. 135’s on-page Lapin debut confirms
the new island = new ecosystem threat arc-opening convention: each Grand Line arc opens by
pitting the crew against the local megafauna before they reach the human conflict (Little
Garden’s dinosaurs → Drum’s Lapins). Naming the chapter itself after the creature marks the
Lapins as load-bearing arc-imagery — forward-canon, the Lapins recur at the Drum arc’s
emotional climax. The Ch. 135 encounter also doubles as a combat-grammar stress-test: the
crew cannot fight (combat-shock would kill the carried Nami; deep snow neutralizes Sanji’s
kicks) and must dodge-and-run instead — see
