Chapter 76: Sleep

Summary

Page 1 — chapter title splash: SLEEP. Full-page tableau of Luffy perched on a tree branch with two big owls, Sanji seated at the base of the tree, Usopp and a small child (looks like Chabo) below, and a giant owl-face foregrounded bottom-right. Pages 2-7 — the Coco Village outskirts confrontation. Nami (in striped polka-dot tank and dark capris, holding her bo staff) faces Luffy / Sanji / Zoro / Usopp / Yosaku / Johnny. DOOM!! SFX. Usopp narrates the Arlong-officer reveal to the others (pages 3-4): “In order to get her meat-hooks on some hidden treasure… she’s joined Arlong’s pirates! She butchers people like pigs!! I’m telling you, this woman is a witch!!!” Then, climbing into combat-rhetoric: “She made fools of us all, brothers!!! She was rotten from the start!!! I saw this witch stab Brother Usopp to death with my own eyes!!!” (Usopp ironically narrating his own death at Nami’s hands — Ch. 75 cliffhanger). Nami (calm, neutral): “You want to kill me?” / “So what?” / “But you’re no match for a real monster. You may have monstrous powers… Right now, Arlong is out to kill Roronoa Zolo and his crew… …because Zolo had to go and do something stupid.” The Nami-warns-them-Arlong-will-kill-Zoro beat is delivered in Nami’s witch-register — the warning lands inside the rejection.

Zoro / Sanji argue on the spot (page 5) — Sanji: “What kind of swordsman attacks a young lady, Zolo?” / “CUT THE CRAP!!!” (Zoro) / “Stay out of this, you love-struck fool!!!” (Zoro to Sanji). Then Sanji (composed): “Hmph. After your humiliating defeat, it’s no wonder you’re in a foul mood.” Zoro: “WHAT?!” The Straw Hat internal-Sanji-Zoro-friction register installs at the arc’s interpersonal layer.

Nami breaks the argument (page 6): “This is no time to be arguing!!” Brandishing the bo staff: “Try it. You can barely stand. Or I’ll send your head flying. Hold your tongue…” Then, calmly: “He’s right!! If you want to fight each other, then sail somewhere far away and do it. We don’t like outsiders sticking their noses into our business!!!” Then the kill-shot speech: “I only pretended to be your friend to get my hands on your loot!!! Now you’re broke, so our friendship is finished!!!” / “Now get lost!!! I’m sick of the sight of you!!!” / “…and go look for your stupid one piece. Take your boat back, find yourselves a navigator…” Page 7 panel 1 — Nami fully framed on the path, the others in long-shot, sun-and-clouds backdrop. “Goodbye.”

Luffy: “Nami.” — pause, then THWUMP…!!! Nami swings her staff and clubs Luffy across the head. “BROTHER LUFFY?!” (Usopp); “OH…” (Sanji); “UNH…” (Luffy, dazed). Page 8: Luffy gets up, stretches, eyes closed, smiles: “Goodnight.” He lies down in the middle of the road (“WAAAAH!!!” — bystander shock). Sanji panicking: “Now?!! In the middle of the road?!” Luffy: “Those fish-heads don’t scare me. I don’t want to leave this island. Now I’m a little sleepy… So I’m gonna take a nap.” Nami (face-close-up, fanged-rage, sweat-drop): “It’s your funeral!!! Suit yourself!!!” / “HUH!?” (Sanji’s if-Luffy-stays-I-stay face).

Page 9 — Yosaku and Johnny break with the crew. They are sweat-drenched, holding hard hats. “You guys aren’t normal!! That woman’s evil!! She murdered Brother Usopp!!!” / “Now Arlong is looking for us! Why should we stay here?!” / “I’m with Johnny!!” (Yosaku). / “We’ve been mates but a short time… but our paths split here. I don’t fancy being slaughtered by Arlong!!” Zoro (calm profile): “FAREWELL, THEN.” / “GOOD LUCK, BROTHERS!!” (Yosaku/Johnny). / “SAME TO YOU!” / “We’ll see you around!” The expository-courier duo of Ch. 43-75 exits the arc.

Page 10 — DOOM!! — Usopp staggers into Coco Village in long-shot, body bloodied, sweat-pouring, slingshot still on him. “NAMI…” (sobbing voice-bubbles). Insert panel: a flashback to Nami impaling-style with the sword (page 10 final-panel, page 11 opening — Usopp’s witch-mode reading inverts). Usopp inner-monologue: “If she was a witch to the core, she wouldn’t have saved me!!” / “If Nami hadn’t done what she did… Arlong would’ve killed me for sure.” / “It’s business. I had no choice.” (Nami’s remembered words to Usopp, in quote-bubble fragment).

Usopp staggers through Coco Village (page 11), now looking for Zoro: “That octopus-man said he took Zolo to Coco Village.” / “I’ve gotta find Zolo or…” / “…was looking for Arlong.” / “Wait… Zolo… Could he have gone to storm Arlong Park?!” / “DARN!!” Page 12 — Usopp running, TMP TMP TMP: “Please don’t let Zolo get to Arlong Park before I find him!! I GOTTA FIND ZOLO!!!” Cut to Zoro — “Hey.” / “YEAH?!” (Usopp finds him on the road). Zoro/Sanji are walking together; Sanji is at his elbow. “Witch woman?!” / “Maybe she decided to prove me wrong. I told her she wasn’t really a witch woman…” / “Could Nami really have killed Usopp?” (Sanji, gentle). Page 13 — “YOU HAVEN’T GONE TO ARLONG PARK YET!! GREAT!! HEY!” (Usopp running up). “HEY!! IS THAT YOU, ZOLO?!” Usopp tackles Sanji: WAP!! / “NAMI ISN’T A WITCH WOMAN!!!” Sanji (eating the tackle): “OOF!!!” / “Can’t you do anything but kick?!” (Sanji’s only-defensive-move-is-kick gag-grammar — see Sanji Kicks-Only Combat Style). Cut to Nojiko’s house (pages 14-16). WHAM-style establishing-shot of the tangerine-grove house. KLANK!!-KRASH!! — Nami throwing/breaking things in the kitchen. Nojiko (calm, hand-on-hip): “Wrecking the house again, Nami?” / “What’s wrong?” / “Why are you staring at that treasure map?” / “Try resting without breaking things for a change. I’ve had it with your tantrums.” Nami (face-down on the table, head on arm): “Nothing! I just need some rest.” Nojiko: “You promised to tell me everything, remember?” Nami (face-up, fanged-eyes-grin): “Something happened that made me mad, that’s all!” Then, eyes calm, retelling: “I met the captain… His story struck me as a little… colorful.” Nojiko: “You met them? … …Just who are they?” / “Those guys?”

Page 16 — Nami’s tattooed arm rests on the table next to the treasure-map. The arm shown in foreground (Arlong-pirates branding visible in the pin-wheel/sun mark tattoo on the upper arm). Nami: ”…I see…” / “So those guys came to fetch you.” / “Ship-mates… ‘friends.’” (Nojiko, in the kitchen, hand to mouth, quiet smile). Nami: zzzz… zzzz. — asleep at the table. Nojiko (close-up, faint smile, eyes closed): ”…That’s the most painful word there is.” / “For this girl…”

Page 17 — back to the road outside Coco Village. Usopp: “Did Nami do this to you?!” (Sanji/Zoro to Usopp). “USOPP!!!” (Usopp’s twitch SFX from the tackle). “It was you. Well, actually, it was Zolo and me.” (Sanji and Zoro, sheepish — they’re the ones who knocked him over). “She saved my life!! But first, Nami…” (Usopp). Then Luffy and the others arrive: “Luffy, you came.” (Sanji) / “Um, I’m here too… buddy.” (Sanji, jealous-aside, “I’LL GET YOU FOR THIS, SANJI!!!” — Usopp). “Yeah.” (Luffy, neutral). Then Usopp (close-up, sweat-mode): “She’s got some ulterior motive for being with those fish-men.” Luffy (close-up): “That’s what I think!!!” The chapter ends on the Straw-Hats-collectively-decide-Nami-has-an-ulterior-motive beat. The witch-misdirect is fully broken by chapter-close, with the crew aligned on Nami’s real-side.

Page 18 — SBS Question Corner. Reader greeting (“Hey, you!! Nami-lover from Volume 7!!” etc.) and four exchanges: (1) Two Nami-lovers should be friends, (2) Sanji is 19, true; (3) Zeff ate his right foot because the right foot is the foundation of a strong kick, (4) meta-joke about two copies of Vol. 5, (5) Luffy musician-crewmate punt.
