The seed
Narration states Katakuri ’s Observation Haki is “so refined, he can actually see the near future”; he demonstrates it twice in one beat — pre-empting Jigra ’s gunshot and quoting Bege ’s reply word-for-word before Bege speaks (Ch. 860 p. 14).
Katakuri tells Bege to report Jigra’s kill to Mama as his own call; Bege has not yet answered, but Katakuri recites “All right… will do.” an instant before Bege says it. An explicit power-tell loaded early, before Katakuri is shown as an antagonist — setting up the eventual Luffy–Katakuri confrontation where matching this future-sight becomes the win condition.
Ch. 862 pp. 9, 13-14 — future-sight demonstrated again at the wedding
Katakuri foresees Pudding falling to the ground and foresees Sanji dodging the assassin’s bullet, before either happens — “Why will you fall to the ground…?!” (p. 9), “No good! He’ll dodge!” (p. 13), “He saw the future!! ” (p. 9). His future-sight is shown but NOT named as Haki /Observation Haki on-page here. Reinforces the load-bearing setup for the eventual Luffy –Katakuri duel, where matching this future-sight becomes the win condition (payoff forward — keep pending).
Ch. 864 pp. 15, 17 — “a future of impending disaster” + the “change the future” counter
The allies note Katakuri has “seen a future of impending disaster!!! ” and turns pale moving to intervene (p. 15) — the future-sight again in play. Pedro reframes such foresight as no destiny: “You can see a bit into the future… but that ain’t some special privilege… everyone has an equal right to change the future!!! ” (p. 17). Seeds both (a) Katakuri’s precognitive Observation Haki and (b) the thematic limit — the future can still be changed — that Luffy will eventually exploit in their duel.
Ch. 865 p. 5 — “I too can read the future!!”
Katakuri , gloating over the candy-trapped Vinsmokes : “in this one situation, I too can read the future !! …being able to see the future makes a man such a busybody!!” Played as a throwaway taunt, but another explicit on-page statement of his future-sight Observation Haki — the chekhov-explicit setup for the eventual Luffy duel where matching it becomes the win condition.
Ch. 873 p. 5 — “I will bring down Straw Hat Luffy myself!!”
Katakuri , taking Brûlée to pursue: “I can sense that he ought to be snuffed out now… before he becomes a true threat to Mama. That’s the plan… and I will bring down Straw Hat Luffy myself!! ” His preternatural certainty about Luffy ’s future — sensing the threat Luffy will become — reads as the same future-sight Observation Haki and explicitly seeds the personal Luffy–Katakuri duel to come.
Ch. 874 p. 17 — guards the Sunny “just in case” despite “zero” odds
Katakuri is told the fleeing crew’s chances of reaching the Sunny are “zero ,” yet he still stations himself at the southwest coast “JUST IN CASE… ” Guarding against an outcome he has been told is impossible is a quiet over-hedge tell that he operates on an information edge — the same future-sight Observation Haki, here shown as caution rather than a quoted prediction.
Ch. 878 p. 13 — “you can see it coming, but you can’t stop me!!”
As Luffy attacks, he taunts Katakuri : “You can see it coming, but you can’t stop me!! ” — an on-page dialogue tell that Katakuri perceives attacks before they land , restating his advanced future-sight Observation Haki on the eve of the sealed Mirro-World duel.
Ch. 879 pp. 11-17 — anticipates and returns Luffy’s every attack
In the opening of the Mirro-World duel, Katakuri does not merely react — he seems to know each attack: he instantly copies Hawk Gatling (“more efficient this way”), dodges into “He vanished!!”, taunts “as I already told you… ,” and ends by asking “Is that how you do… your Elephant Gun?” while throwing the move back, bigger. Combined with “I have you beat in both speed and strength,” this restates his concealed advanced Observation-Haki / future-sight edge on the eve of the sealed duel.
Ch. 881 p. 17 — voices Luffy’s resolve a beat before he speaks it
In the Mirro-World duel, Katakuri says Luffy’s line — “‘I don’t intend to die here’” — a beat before Luffy gasps the same words, then asks whether to treat it as Luffy’s “last will and testament.” He answers a sentence that has not yet been spoken — the clearest in-window tell that he perceives events slightly ahead of real time (future-sight Observation Haki).
Ch. 882 p. 10 — mutual future-strike: “The same goes for me”
Mid-duel, Luffy complains “You always attack right in the spot where I’m going to dodge!!” — and Katakuri answers, “The same goes for me. It makes everything twice as tiring!! It’s stressful.” Each fighter strikes at where the other is about to move, not where they are — an explicit, deniable tell that Katakuri’s perception runs a beat ahead of the present (advanced Observation-Haki future-sight), now being mirrored by Luffy himself.
Ch. 883 pp. 15-16 — the future-sight is shown DEFEATABLE
The first crack in Katakuri ’s predictive Observation: once his pride is wounded and his composure breaks (caught mid-merienda, his hidden ripped mouth seen), Luffy lands a clean kick he “didn’t dodge ” (p. 15), and Luffy declares “I think I’m starting to understand… your powers!” (p. 16). Establishes the exact mechanic the duel’s climax will exploit — the future-sight is not infallible, and Luffy is beginning to read it.
The payoff
The seed pays off on-page Ch. 884 Katakuri ’s real strength is an advanced Color of Observation (future-sight) Haki , the obstacle Luffy must overcome — is made fully explicit, and the future-sight is shown to be defeatable (it needs a calm mind; losing composure opens the window).
Ch. 884 pp. 5, 7-9 — the future-sight is named and framed as the win condition
Luffy names Katakuri ’s real edge outright as his Color of Observation — “seeing the future,” not the mochi — and begins reading/answering attacks a beat ahead himself (pp. 5, 7-9). Struck for the first time in years, Katakuri concedes that future-sight requires a calm mind , that losing his composure handed Luffy the opening, and that this is how Cracker was beaten (p. 8). The advanced-Observation future-sight is now explicitly the duel’s central obstacle and the faculty Luffy must acquire to win.
Ch. 886 pp. 18-19 — post-payoff reinforcement: the rule of Haki growth + Luffy’s stated ambition to acquire future-sight
Mid-chase across the Mirro-World ’s mirror-towns, Katakuri makes the growth-rule explicit — “the real advancement in Haki happens during extreme use in battle” — while dismissing Luffy ’s aspiration (“Stop dreaming, shrimpy!!!”). Luffy , draining Katakuri’s Observation Haki by prolonging the fight (“Haki runs out as you use it”), states his goal aloud: “I want to surpass him… to beat the billion-berry man… at his best!!!” and wonders “if I could also see… a bit of the future” (pp. 18-19). Ch. 902 p. 16 — post-payoff recurrence in the Mirro-World epilogue
In the Mirro-World epilogue, Katakuri again uses his future-sight to pre-empt Brûlée ’s spoken questions — “See? I knew it. ” — answering before she asks. A quiet post-payoff recurrence of the established power.

Why this matters
A loud “chekhov-explicit” + “dialogue-prediction” seed: a named power is demonstrated concretely — quoting a line before it is spoken — long before the fight that will hinge on it. Oda front-loads the exact obstacle the protagonist must overcome, so the eventual solution (Luffy developing his own future-sight) reads as earned rather than deus ex machina.
