Firsts
  • **Luffy improvises a *shark-tooth swap* against Arlong** (pages 3-5). After Hatchan is **launched bodily at Luffy as a thrown-shield** by Arlong off-page between Ch. 88 and Ch. 91 (page 1 — *'HEY, YOU ATTACKED US FIRST.'* / *'HOW DARE YOU USE ONE OF MY MEN AS A SHIELD!!!'*), Luffy's *'big idea'* (page 2 — *'Luffy has an idea.'* / *'What is it?'* / *'Has he found the key to victory?'*) turns out to be: **bite Arlong with his bare human teeth**. *TOOTH ATTACK!!!!* (page 3, *CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP*). Predictably ineffective — Luffy bounces off (*WHAK / THUD!!!*) — but he picks himself up grinning *'I did it.'* (page 4). The villagers panic (*'LUFFY, ARE YOU NUTS!? THAT WAS YOUR BIG IDEA!?'* / *'…ARE UNBREAKABLE!!?'*). Arlong (looming, jagged-mouth close-up): *'GRR… DON'T YOU KNOW… …THAT MY TEETH… ARE UNBREAKABLE!!?'* — but **the next panel reveals Luffy is now wearing *Arlong's teeth*** (page 5, *SHUNK! CHONK CHONK*): *'Now I have shark teeth, too!!!'* Luffy has **rubber-grabbed a row of Arlong's teeth off and replaced his own with them** in a single move. The chapter installs **rubber-body-as-tooth-grafting-tool** — Luffy's Devil Fruit applied not for stretch-attack but for **anatomy-theft**. Compounds with the Ch. 22 *Gum-Gum Whip*'s lateral-stretch register and the Ch. 39 *Gum-Gum Balloon*'s body-shape-mod register into a **third Devil-Fruit application axis: body-part swap**.
  • Saw-Tooth Arlong Epithet
  • **Arlong's teeth regenerate near-instantly** (pages 7-8). After Luffy's tooth-swap, Arlong's torn-out tooth-row is **back in his mouth** on page 8 (*'They may be my teeth, but your jaws are too weak!'* — Arlong now-toothed again, biting Luffy's arm). The chapter installs **shark-fish-man tooth-regeneration** as a canonical anatomical feat — Arlong does not lose teeth permanently from the swap. Forward-pattern: the *fish-man regeneration / tooth-pluck-and-regrow* register pre-loads the Ch. 612+ Fish-Man Island arc (Hody Jones tooth-throwing, etc.) and the *shark-tooth-regen* biological-grammar of the saw-shark fish-man species. Arlong's monologue (page 9): *'A shark's teeth are deadly because its jaw muscles have the strength to bite through… …FLESH AND BONE!!!!'* — installs the *jaw-muscle-not-tooth* doctrine: the teeth alone are insufficient; the bite-power is in the jaw.
  • **Arlong bites down on Luffy's arm and nearly tears it off** (pages 9-10). *SHONK!!* Arlong's jaw closes on Luffy's outstretched arm (page 9). Villager horror (page 10): *'AAAAAAAH!!!'* / *'KREK KREK KREK!!'* / *'NO!!! HE'LL BITE OFF LUFFY'S ARM!!!'* / *'GAH!!!'* Luffy *FWAM!!*'s Arlong off (page 10 — Arlong recoils with Luffy's blood in his mouth, *GRAAAH!!!!*). Page 11 — *SHLUP…* Arlong steps back, breath labored, **bloody-mouthed**. Villager dialogue (page 11): *'I doubt he knew that. It had to be dumb luck.'* / *'If he'd taken one step back, he would've lost that arm!'* The chapter installs **Arlong-tier-bite as proximate-amputation-threat** — Luffy's rubber-body survival is *barely* sufficient against the *flesh-and-bone* jaw. Compounds with the Ch. 88 *handful-of-water* feat to set Arlong's combat-tier as *single attack = critical*: every Arlong attack is a potential one-shot.
  • Sea Hates Devil Fruit Users Axiom
  • **Arlong's *Shark Darts* launched from water as torpedo-tier attack** (pages 14-16). *DA-DOOM!! ZHEEN…* (page 14) — Arlong silhouette darts toward the surface like a torpedo. Villager dialogue: *'SHARK… DID HE ESCAPE?'* Arlong erupts from the pool nose-first as a **living torpedo** — *WAAH!!!! …DARTS!!!! BOOM!!* (full-double-page-spread title-drop on page 14 — the chapter title *DARTS* is rendered as the attack's sound-effect-and-name fusion). Arlong smashes through the Arlong Park structure (page 15 — *KRASH!!* / *WHAT WAS THAT!!?* / *A TORPEDO!?* / *ARLONG CAME OUT OF THE WATER!!!*). *THUD!!* Arlong lands on the pavement next to Luffy (page 15 — *UNH…*). Page 16 — *SHARK DARTS!!!!* / *KZAOOOM!!* — Arlong's named-attack title-card delivered in post-attack pose, then he re-enters the pool (*WOOO… SPLOOSH…*). Villager: *'LUFFY, HIDE!! ARLONG'S BACK IN THE WATER!!'* The chapter installs **Shark Darts** (*サメ突き / Same Tsuki* — *Shark-Stab/Lunge*) as Arlong's first on-page named-attack — a *swim-from-deep-water-to-air-collision* technique that exploits the *fish-man-in-water-faster-than-on-land* asymmetry to deliver an *unblockable-because-emerging-from-below* surprise-strike. Forward-pattern: the *underwater-launch-as-projectile-tier* combat-grammar pre-loads Jinbei's *Karakusagawara Seiken / Yagara* fish-man-karate techniques (Ch. 528+) and every Fish-Man-Island fishman combat-feat that exploits water-as-launch-tube.
  • **Arlong's first on-page named-attack** (page 16 — *SHARK DARTS!!!!*). After Ch. 75 *reef-move*, Ch. 88 *handful-of-water* — both **unnamed environmental-rewrite feats** — *Shark Darts* is the first **technique-name** in Arlong's combat-vocabulary. The chapter installs Arlong as a **named-attack-tier combatant**, joining the named-attack roster of the arc's combat-pair villains (Hatchan's *Six-Sword Style*, Kuroobi's *Hyaku-mai Kawara Seiken*, Choo's *Lipoweritzer*). Arlong's species-coded naming pattern (*shark*-prefix) follows the **Hatchan-Octopus / Kuroobi-Ray / Choo-Lip** species-coded combat-vocabulary grammar of the Arlong-Pirates officer-tier.
  • Luffy Versus Krieg Duel Locked
  • **Hatchan is on-page conscious enough to be thrown as a weapon, then exits the chapter unconscious** (pages 1-2). Luffy stands in front of an unconscious-bandaged Hatchan on the pavement (page 1) — Arlong has **just thrown his own officer's body at Luffy as a projectile**, retroactively continuing the Ch. 88 *Arlong-doesn't-spare-his-own-officers* register. Arlong's line — *'HOW DARE YOU USE ONE OF MY MEN AS A SHIELD!!!'* — is the **inversion-blame** register: Arlong threw Hatchan, Luffy *caught* Hatchan, Arlong blames Luffy for the *shield*-use. The blame-inversion grammar is the *villain-frames-the-victim-for-the-villain's-own-action* doctrine (recurs Ch. 78 Bell-mère death-frame, Ch. 80 cache-raid blame-Nami).
  • **Cover-story Vol. 8: Koby-Helmeppo Chronicle of Toil — *'The Ship of Vice-Admiral Garp'*** (page 1, title-page splash). Koby and Helmeppo in *MARINE* chore-boy uniforms (Helmeppo with shaved-bald head, Koby with pink hair) saluting from a small boat in the foreground; a **massive Marine warship with a giant Garp-faced (bulldog/dog-head) figurehead** dominates the background. The figurehead is a snarling dog/bulldog mask atop a tall stern-statue. Sails marked *MARINE* + 海軍 (kaigun, *Navy*) + *HQ.3*. Other chore-boys in *MARINE* uniforms saluting. **First on-page named reference to Vice-Admiral Garp** — Garp is *named* in the cover-title (*'THE SHIP OF VICE-ADMIRAL GARP'*) but not yet shown in human form on-page. The chapter installs **Garp-as-Vice-Admiral** rank-tier and **Garp-owns-a-flagship** in the **Koby-Helmeppo cover-arc**'s Vol. 8 specialization. Continues the cover-arc's *Marines-as-corrective-institution* register from Vols. 2-7 into **the cover-arc's first named-superior** — Koby and Helmeppo's pathway out of chore-boy status runs **through Garp**. Forward-pattern: Garp will be **Luffy's grandfather** (revealed Ch. 92+ in cover-arc / Ch. 432+ in main text), making this cover-story the **first on-page mention of Luffy's grandfather** by name and title.

Summary

Cover-story Vol. 8 of the Koby and Helmeppo’s Chronicle of Toil: ‘The Ship of Vice-Admiral Garp’ — Koby and Helmeppo salute in MARINE chore-boy whites from a foreground rowboat; behind them looms a massive Marine warship with a giant snarling dog/bulldog figurehead, sails marked MARINE / 海軍 / HQ.3. First on-page named-reference to Vice-Admiral Garp — named in the cover-title but not yet shown in person.

Cut to Arlong Park courtyard, mid-Luffy-vs-Arlong duel. Luffy stands over an unconscious Hatchan, holding his ground. Arlong (off-page, between Ch. 88 and Ch. 91): ‘HEY, YOU ATTACKED US FIRST.’ / ‘HOW DARE YOU USE ONE OF MY MEN AS A SHIELD!!!’ — Arlong has thrown Hatchan’s body at Luffy as a projectile, then blames Luffy for the shield-use (villain-inverts-blame-for-villain’s-own-action register).

Villagers/Sanji/Zoro/Nami/Usopp: ‘Has he found the key to victory?’ / ‘What is it?’ / ‘Luffy has an idea.’ / ’…’ / ‘Geez, Luffy, you scared us!’ — chapter-title-grade comic deflation. Luffy’s idea: TOOTH ATTACK!!!!bite Arlong with his bare human teeth (CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP). Predictably, WHAK / THUD!!! — Luffy bounces off Arlong’s invulnerable teeth. Luffy gets up grinning: ‘I did it.’ Villagers panic: ‘LUFFY, ARE YOU NUTS!? THAT WAS YOUR BIG IDEA!?’ / ’…ARE UNBREAKABLE!!?’

Arlong (looming jagged-mouth close-up): ‘GRR… DON’T YOU KNOW… …THAT MY TEETH… ARE UNBREAKABLE!!?’ — and the next panel reveals Luffy is wearing Arlong’s teeth. SHUNK! CHONK CHONK — Luffy (now shark-toothed): ‘Now I have shark teeth, too!!! Look!’ The Devil Fruit’s rubber-grab has plucked a row of Arlong’s teeth off and grafted them into Luffy’s own jaw in a single move. The chapter installs rubber-body-as-anatomy-theft-tool — a third Devil-Fruit-application axis after stretch-attack (Ch. 22 Whip) and body-shape-mod (Ch. 39 Balloon).

Luffy: ‘I’M NOT FOOLING AROUND!!’ SHWAK!! — Luffy slams the appropriated shark-teeth into Arlong’s face. Villager: ‘AAAGH!! I’VE BEEN BEATEN BY A FISH!!!’ (Arlong’s own villager-witness register inverts — he’s been bitten by a fish — i.e. by his own teeth) / ‘THAT’S WHAT YOU GET FOR FOOLING AROUND!!!’ Luffy: ‘How’s it feel being bitten by your own teeth!?!? Hurts, huh!?’

Arlong (now bandage-headed, teeth regenerated): ‘They may be my teeth, but your jaws are too weak! A shark’s teeth are deadly because its jaw muscles have the strength to bite through… …FLESH AND BONE!!!!’ SHONK!! — Arlong bites down on Luffy’s outstretched arm. The chapter installs (a) shark-fish-man tooth-regeneration (Arlong’s teeth grow back instantly), and (b) the jaw-muscle-not-tooth doctrine (the bite-power is in the jaw, not the dentition).

Villagers panic at the arm-bite (page 10 — AAAAAAAH!!! / KREK KREK KREK!! / NO!!! HE’LL BITE OFF LUFFY’S ARM!!! / GAH!!!). Luffy FWAM!!‘s Arlong off, recoiling bloody-mouthed. SHLUP… — Arlong steps back, panting. Villager dialogue calibration (page 11): ‘I doubt he knew that. It had to be dumb luck. If he’d taken one step back, he would’ve lost that arm!’ Sanji/Usopp/Genzo run up: ‘Are you okay, Luffy!?’ Arlong looks down at Luffy. SHLUK — Arlong vanishes off-panel.

DOOM!!! — Arlong gone from the courtyard. Sanji/villagers: ‘Where’d he go!?’ / ‘The water…’ / ‘LUFFY, HE’S IN THE WATER!!!’ Luffy peering at the pool (WOOOOOO echo, full-back-shot): ‘What?’ GURGLE GLU… Then Luffy realizes: ‘It’s Arlong!!!’ / ‘Hey, a shark!!!’ / ‘He went under.’ Arlong (underwater, internal monologue, the chapter’s villain-doctrine peak): ‘NOBODY CAN BEAT ME IN THE WATER!! I’M EVEN FASTER IN MY OWN ELEMENT!!!’ GLUP GLUP — Arlong submerges deeper.

DA-DOOM!! ZHEEN… — Arlong silhouette darts toward the surface like a torpedo. Villager: ‘SHARK… DID HE ESCAPE?’ Then full-double-page-spread chapter-title-drop on page 14: WAAH!!!! …DARTS!!!! BOOM!! — Arlong erupts from the pool nose-first as a living torpedo, the chapter title DARTS rendered as the attack’s sound-effect-and-name fusion. KRASH!! — Arlong smashes through Arlong Park’s structure (page 15). Villager: ‘WHAT WAS THAT!!? A TORPEDO!? ARLONG CAME OUT OF THE WATER!!!’ THUD!! — Arlong lands next to Luffy in the rubble (UNH…). Page 16 — SHARK DARTS!!!! / KZAOOOM!! (Arlong’s named-attack title-card delivered in post-attack pose), then he re-enters the pool (WOOO… SPLOOSH…). Villager: ‘LUFFY, HIDE!! ARLONG’S BACK IN THE WATER!!’

Page 17 — Genzo and Sanji: ‘NO WAY!!!’ / ‘WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?’ / ‘HE’S GONNA ATTACK AGAIN!! RUN!!’ / ‘NO.’ / ‘BROTHER LUFFY, YOU HAVE TO RETREAT!!’ Luffy (full-page reverse-angle, alone at pool’s edge, WOOOOOO echo): ‘I’M GONNA KNOCK HIM OUT!!! I’M GONNA GET HIM.’ DOOM!! GLUP / DOOM!! — Luffy bracing as Arlong’s underwater silhouette rises for second pass. Chapter cliffhanger on Luffy-versus-Arlong-mid-second-Shark-Darts-pass.

Page 18 — the SBS Question Corner is replaced this chapter by a labeled cutaway-diagram of the Going Merry with 8 numbered ship-locations (Conference Room/Galley/Bridge; Men’s Quarters; Storeroom/Battery; Women’s Quarters; Gun Deck/Anchor Rope; Bathroom; Luffy’s Cabin; Nami’s Tangerine Grove). Opening line: ‘INSTEAD OF THE SBS QUESTION CORNER, HERE’S A CUT-AWAY VIEW OF LUFFY’S SHIP, THE MERRY GO. A LOT OF READERS HAVE ASKED ABOUT IT.’ — first canonical interior-architecture commitment for the Merry; first canonical mention of Nami’s Tangerine Grove being on the ship (pre-loads the post-arc-climax transplant of Bell-mère’s tangerine trees onto the Merry).

Open questions raised

  • What is Arlong’s full named-technique roster? Shark Darts is the first; the arc-climax (Ch. 92-94) should fire additional named techniques. Forward-watch: Shark On Tooth, Tooth Gum, Crescent Moon Strike (anime/manga-name lookup TBD).
  • Does Arlong have other tooth-related anatomy combat-feats? Tooth-regeneration installed; tooth-throw, tooth-eating, tooth-shed-as-weapon all open.
  • How does Luffy beat an underwater-tier fish-man as a DF-user? The arc-climax must solve the DF-can’t-swim / fish-man-faster-in-water asymmetry. Forward-prediction: Luffy uses the courtyard/water boundary itself as the combat-arena — fights only when Arlong emerges, holds ground at the pool’s edge.
  • Who is Vice-Admiral Garp? First named in the cover-title. Forward-watch: cover-arc Vol. 9-10 will reveal more; main-text reveal of Garp is Luffy’s grandfather is Ch. 432+ (post-Enies Lobby).
  • Does Hatchan revive? Last seen as Arlong’s thrown projectile, unconscious-bandaged on the courtyard pavement. Forward-watch: Hatchan’s redemption arc begins post-Arlong defeat (Ch. 95+ / Fish-Man Island reunion Ch. 530+).
  • Will Bell-mère’s tangerine trees end up on the Merry? The cutaway diagram canonizes Nami’s Tangerine Grove on the ship — but the grove on Conomi Islands has not yet been physically transplanted. Forward-watch: post-arc-resolution chapters.
