The seed
The payoff
The line becomes a literal structural device. Luffy and Koby cross paths at:
- Loguetown — Koby/Helmeppo arrive under Garp’s command; first reunion.
- Marineford — Koby Haki-awakens shouting to stop the war; second reunion (and Luffy’s first witnessed Haki-event by a Marine peer).
- Post-timeskip Marineford fragment — brief encounter as Koby is mid-rise.
- Egghead / SWORD reveal — Koby’s special-ops status surfaces; third structural reunion era.
Pre-promised reunions are an Oda signature. The Shanks hat-return promise from Ch.0001 is the prototype; this Ch.0007 Luffy-Koby promise is the first one entirely within the main story (the Shanks promise is from the flashback).
Technique stack
- promise-grammar — close-up + eyes-closed + full-grin = binding-vow composition. Recurs at every load-bearing Luffy oath.
- parallel-arc-structure — the reunion cadence is engineered to mark major saga inflections.
- dialogue-explicit — the promise is said out loud, on-page, not implied.
Why this matters
When Luffy verbalises a future meeting with the promise-grammar composition, the meeting is structurally guaranteed. Test this against any future panel where Luffy delivers a “we’ll meet again” line in that composition — count the meetings. The reliability of the rule is one of Oda’s most consistent storytelling tells.
