Summary
Cover splash (page 1): Buggy’s Crew: After the Battle Part 21 — “An Unhappy Reunion” — Buggy (now in a black cape with white-skull lining over his striped shirt) stands beside a fallen, beaten-bloody Richie (the lion), face-up in the mud with a small !GAAAH!! speech bubble. Buggy looks down silently. The cover-story’s Buggy-and-the-lion-reunite arc has hit its rupture — Ritchie’s pirate-crew (Part 19) has now apparently betrayed or wronged Buggy, and the captaincy-succession-via-lion cover-arc reaches an emotional break-point.
The chapter proper opens at the chapter-prior cliffhanger: Luffy is trapped inside the iron-net spider-web Don Krieg has pinned him with. Page 2 — Luffy’s grin in a tight close-up at the panel-top (“Of course, boy!!!” — Krieg’s voice from below). Pages 3-4 — the chapter’s combat-mechanics installation. Krieg explains the trap: “That’s the sea below you!! You lose, Anchor Boy!! All I have to do is toss you into the ocean!! You won’t escape from my iron net!!! And I get the last laugh, as I knew I would!!! Drown, rubber boy!!!” The Krieg-Pirates cheer — “That’s our Don Krieg!!!”. Luffy, still grinning: “This match is mine!!! If I can get my arms and legs out…” (PLOINK! — a foot pops through the netting). Page 7 — Krieg’s monologue lands a doctrinal beat: “I’m Don Krieg, admiral of the Pirate Armada… Were you thinking the same thing?” Then the order: “MEN, KILL THIS PEST!!!” The crew snaps: “AYE-AYE, DON KRIEG!!!” (KLAK KLAK KLAK) — a row of cannons swing down at the net-suspended Luffy. “THIS IS THE END!!!” (SHOOOM!!) — cannons cock to fire.
Page 8 — BOOM!! / “EVERYBODY SHOOT AT ONCE!!” The salvo strikes the iron-net Luffy is suspended in. Cut to Sanji on the Baratie deck (“You’re going down.” / “EEEK!!”) — but Sanji’s line is redirected by Zeff’s voice: “Don’t.” The chapter’s emotional pivot lands in a single word. Zeff’s intervention freezes Sanji mid-rescue (page 8 bottom: WIP WIP WIP / RAAAAH!! — Luffy’s body, still in the net, is being swung in a circle by Krieg, who has wound up an enormous arc-swing).
Page 9 — WUP WUP WUP / GUM-GUM… — Luffy Gum-Gum’s a hand free of the netting (the single shouted devil-fruit-naming beat of the chapter); Krieg, oblivious, continues winding up the swing — the net-and-Luffy-as-pendulum is being prepared as a thrown projectile. Krieg’s face fills the right-side panel, mouth open in a battle-bellow (GRAAAR!! / RAAAAH!!).
Page 10 — full-page splash. Krieg, silhouetted in stark black, leg arcing overhead in a giant hammer-style swing, the netted Luffy at the tip of the arc, “GIANT GAVEL!!!” shouted in giant SFX-text. The Ch. 60 page-16 spiked-mace silhouette tease is here operationalized as a kick-attack — Krieg uses his own leg to swing the netted Luffy as the gavel-head. (Note: in the Krieg-arsenal grammar, the spiked-mace becomes a finishing weapon; this Giant Gavel is a body-as-bludgeon tier using Luffy as the impact-mass.)
Page 11 — WUH!!! The Giant Gavel comes down with shattering force, Krieg’s leg overhead, Luffy’s net-bound body pulped against the Baratie deck. The composition is the netting-as-flail; the impact-shot fills the page.
Page 12 — Krieg’s broken-teeth close-up at the top (slight grin), then the Krieg-Pirates erupt in cheers: “DON KRIEG!!! AAAAAAAH!! WAAAAAH!!” Baratie-side cooks erupt in opposite cheer (HOORAY!!): “He… he really did it!! He beat Don Krieg… CHORE BOY!! YOU DID IT!!” — the cooks misread the Giant Gavel as Luffy somehow defeating Krieg, because they cannot see who is on top in the impact. (Page 12’s compositional trick: the cooks’ POV doesn’t have the SFX-text label, so they read the impact as ambiguous and default to Chore Boy won.) The misread is the chapter’s tragic-irony beat.
Page 13 — the truth lands. WHOOOM!! — the netted Luffy is flung off the Baratie deck into the sea (SPLOOSH!!) — Krieg’s gavel-finish has kicked Luffy into the ocean while still wrapped in the iron-net. “Heh…” (Krieg, smug). The cooks watch (RAAAAH…) — the Krieg-Pirates resume their roar. Luffy is now sinking, devil-fruit-cursed, in a net he cannot Gum-Gum free of in time.
Pages 14-15 — the chapter’s thesis monologue, delivered by Zeff in close-up, watching from the Baratie railing. Zeff (cigar smoking, eyes shadowed under his chef’s hat — grit…): “If that ragtag fleet of Krieg’s is military might… and his fancy weapons are military might… then that kid’s grit… is military might, too.” Sanji listens (grit…). Page 14 large panel — Zeff’s profile, ear lit by the morning sun: “Even a man bristling with powerful weapons… can be skewered by the spear of blind grit.” The chapter’s title-aphorism lands here — the spear of blind grit. Page 15 — Zeff continues: “But I know a fool who’s chewing a spear of his own… for no good reason.” Cut to Sanji at the railing (KLOMP KLOMP — Zeff’s peg leg approaching). Zeff explodes the doctrine: “YOU SHOULD’VE TOLD US THAT SOONER, CRAP-GEEZER!!!” — Sanji (eyes wide, alarmed): “The sea hates those with the power of the devil fruit. They sink like anchors.” Zeff: “You’d better haul him up. That kid can’t float.” The chapter’s operational axiom: The sea hates those with the power of the devil fruit. They sink like anchors. This is the first canonical articulation of the devil-fruit-vs-sea axis as a general rule — not merely Luffy can’t swim, but the sea actively hates DF users, all DF users sink. Sanji (bottom panel) — HMPH…!! — dives off the Baratie (SPLA SH!!) to fetch Luffy. The dive is silent; the Krieg-Pirates are still cheering victory; the rescue-attempt is simultaneous with the celebration.
Page 16 — pull back to the Krieg flagship: pieces of Krieg’s armor are visible scattered (subtle pre-load for next-chapter’s combat — Krieg’s wootz armor is already chipping even though the chapter ended on his win). Krieg-side dialogue: “There are pieces of his armor all over the place!! But just look there.” / “Krieg lost!?” / “I never thought he could lose!! He was the master of these waters!! I thought he was the strongest man in the world!!! He was the only man I ever admired!!!” — the Krieg crew is eulogizing Krieg as if defeated while Krieg has actually won the round. The cooks’ misread (page 12) and the Krieg-crew’s misread here are paired. Bottom: Sanji dragged back onto the Baratie wounded (SPLASH!! / KOFF!! KOFF!!) — “Who knows!? But it can’t be good for him!! Will it spread if he moves around!? Just lie down!! Sit still, you swab. If you move, the poison will…” — Sanji has been hit by the shuriken-bomb-or-MH5 residue (likely the poison from the MH5 actually firing later, or shuriken puncture from earlier). The cooks restrain him; he is trying to dive again. WAP WAP!! — Sanji slaps off restraint, crawling to the railing: “Hey… don’t die.”
Page 17 — Sanji at the railing, watching the sea (close-up of his eye, single sweat-bead, calling down to the sinking Luffy). Cut to Krieg in close-up (“…my vow, my ambition… everything I care about… will be shattered. If I retreat even one step!! First one, now the other!!”) — Krieg’s winner-take-all doctrine (Ch. 59 Krieg In This World Winner Takes All) is here re-articulated as dream-as-non-retreatable. Cut to Luffy underwater (close-up, half-conscious — “I AM THE STRONGEST!!” in echo-thought from Krieg): the Krieg-line bleeds into Luffy’s panel. Cut to Sanji on the deck (“It’s easy!! Abandon your stupid dream!!?” — Sanji to himself, sardonic). Luffy (final panel, fist clenched in the water, eyes shadowed, mouth tight): “THIS ISN’T MY PLACE TO DIE!!!” The chapter ends on Luffy’s dream-vs-death equivalence — for the first time in the series, Luffy articulates the if-I-die-here-my-dream-dies axis as an operative refusal to drown. Q&A: (1) Does Sanji like to say crap? — “He loves to.” (2) Naval rank-system explained in a hierarchy diagram (Commander in Chief > Fleet Admiral > Admiral > Vice Admiral/Rear Admiral/Commodore > Captain/Commander/Lt Commander > Lieutenant/Lt Junior Grade/Ensign > Warrant Officer > Master Chief PO/Chief PO/PO > Seaman/Seaman Apprentice/Seaman Recruit > Chore Boy). Koby is at Branch 153; branches are commanded by officers ranked higher than captain. “Maybe someday Koby will be an officer.” Also clarifies Lt. Fullbody’s position. New reveals
- The Giant Gavel attack (pages 9-11) — Krieg’s body-as-flail combat technique. With the iron-net binding Luffy, Krieg swings his own leg in a giant overhead arc, using Luffy’s netted body as the gavel-head. The attack-name (GIANT GAVEL!!!) is shouted on page 10 in splash-text. The Ch. 60 spiked-mace silhouette is not this attack (the mace is a separate hand-weapon, presumably for next chapter); the Giant Gavel is a body-strength combat tier distinct from the mace. The Krieg-arsenal grammar is now: armor (wootz) + integrated firearms + diamond fists + cannonball-modular + spiked-mace (Ch. 60 silhouette, undeployed) + Giant Gavel body-flail (Ch. 66, deployed).
- The Iron Net trap (pages 2-13) — Krieg’s spider-web-and-anchor combat-tactic: trap a Devil Fruit user in a metal net, then throw the net into the sea. The DF-user’s can’t-swim curse becomes the deathblow-mechanic. The Iron Net is established as a DF-specific antagonist weapon — the first on-page weapon explicitly designed to exploit the DF-can’t-swim axiom. Forward-payoff: every later antagonist who tries to drown a Straw Hat (Arlong’s pool, Spandam’s water-prison plans, Magellan’s Doku Doku immobilization, Hody’s Fishman Karate dunking) is a re-deployment of the Iron-Net-and-sink doctrine.

- How does Luffy escape the iron net while sinking? The chapter ends with Luffy in the net at the bottom of the sea, conscious, refusing to die. Forward-question: does Sanji’s next dive succeed? Or does Luffy free himself via Gum-Gum stretching from below?
- What is the actual extent of Sanji’s poison exposure? Page 16: “the poison will…” — the cooks fear poison-spread if Sanji moves. Is this MH5 residue (the chapter previously suggested the actual fired round was the shuriken-bomb, but residue from the cannon may be lingering)? Or shuriken-puncture infection? Forward-question.
