“Once you go down, you can’t get back up… like a mousetrap.” — Zeff, Ch. 57 page 15
The metaphor is Zeff’s deadpan description of the survival rock’s geometry, but it is also the chapter’s compositional foreshadowing for the leg-sacrifice. The metaphor reads two ways:
- Literal: the rock has been carved by waves into an inverted overhang — climb down to fish, you can’t climb back up. The literal reading is the chapter’s survival-exposition.
- Structural: once Zeff commits to saving Sanji, he cannot reverse the commitment. The mentor-disciple bond is irreversible. The eventual leg-sacrifice is the total cost of the irreversible commitment.
The chapter’s compositional double-meaning is the quietest seed for the Ch. 58 leg-loss reveal — Zeff’s commitment is total and irreversible, just like the mousetrap.
