The seed

The Straw Hats receive their first canonical ship at the arc’s resolution — gifted by Kaya — and Merry (the servant) is the ship’s namesake. The ship is the Going Merry. The seed installed on Ch. 27 page 2 pays off ~14 chapters later.
The longer-burn payoff is the ship’s eventual death in the Water 7 / Enies Lobby arc, where the Going Merry’s spirit (Klabautermann) is shown to have been alive — the loyalty-to-the-crew that Merry-the-servant modeled in Ch. 27 is the loyalty the ship demonstrates in its final voyage.
