The ship-as-character grammar installs here. The Going Merry is a load-bearing protagonist-craft across the Eastern Blue saga and the entire pre-Water-7 Grand Line arcs. The ship’s eventual death/funeral at Water 7 (~Ch 430) is the most-mourned ship-death in shōnen manga history — the named-and-cared-for craft setup that begins in Ch 42 pays off in the Klabautermann / ship-spirit folklore beats and the funeral-pyre composition at the arc’s end.
