Chapter 36: After Them!!

Summary

The Syrup Village chase escalates on two fronts. In the woods south of the slope, Usopp, Kaya, and the three kids (Onion, Carrot, Pepper) are sprinting away from Django the hypnotist when Butchie — one of the Black Cat Pirates’ Nyaban Brothers, hypnotized by Django to be super-strong — bursts through the forest roaring and toppling trees (“GRAARR — COME OUT AND PLAY, YOU ROTTEN BRATS!!”). Butchie pins paralyzed-Usopp to the ground; Kaya and the kids freeze. On the cliff above, Luffy and Zoro have caught up to Captain Kuro of the Black Cat Pirates mid-slope. Kuro openly confirms that Kaya was a pawn whose death he is waiting for (“not an ounce” of feeling for her despite three years cohabiting). The chapter splits between the two engagements: Zoro grazes Butchie off Usopp with a FWIP-WHOMP strike (“You’ve been a very bad kitty… stay down and shut up, and I may let you live”), Luffy reads Usopp’s catatonia (“My body… I can’t move!!”) and Butchie’s mocking laughter (“YOU LOOK RIDICULOUS!!”) together as a single insult, plants a straw-hat-shaded glare on Butchie, and delivers the chapter’s iconic line — “Laugh at Usopp again… and I’ll kill you.” (page 11) — followed by a captain-grade boot stomp (“RREOWRR!!”). Zoro stops Cabaji-grade — no, Butchie-grade — escalation by hoisting paralyzed Usopp over his shoulder and running back up the slope to catch Kuro. The chapter’s set-piece is the Kuro-Luffy first exchange on the slope: Kuro asks the recruitment-pattern question — “Why are you, an outsider, sticking your neck out for this village?” — and Luffy answers with the simplest possible declarative — ”…I don’t want you to kill.” Kuro responds “Is it enough… to die for?” with a grin. Luffy fires the chapter’s first named technique, “Gum-Gum… Spear!!” (page 17, feet-first stretched strike); Kuro warps out of position via what later chapters will name the Pussy Foot Maneuver, leaving the spear to detonate empty ground. Luffy: “Hey… he disappeared again!” Kuro re-materializes at the kids’ position — “So here you are.” — and the chapter ends on the kids screaming, Kaya collapsed in fever, and Usopp finally being carried back into the fight by Zoro. The cover-story B-plot is the second post-Orange-Town survivors page: a splash of Cabaji on his unicycle carrying an unconscious Mohji over his shoulder with Richie the lion bandaged at their feet, captioned “BUGGY’S CREW: AFTER THE BATTLE! PART TWO: MOHJI AND CABAJI” (page 1).

New reveals

• Hypnosis-buff persistence: Butchie remains super-strong after Django has left the scene to chase Usopp’s group — the buff is a persistent state, not a contact-mode aura. Confirmed in-dialogue on page 13: “But Butchie was hypnotized to be super-strong!!” This is the first on-page demonstration in the series that a non-Devil-Fruit power (hypnosis) can leave a persistent buff on its subject. Mechanics-of-the-world note: hypnosis here is causal on the body, not just on the mind.
• Kuro can warp/teleport short distances: Twice in the chapter Kuro vanishes from a fixed position and reappears at another (page 8 “TA-TUMP”; page 16 “KLINK / SHWOOM” leaving the slope; page 18 “GRRRR” reappearing in front of the kids — sequence covers ~3 panels with no in-between motion). • First on-page “Gum-Gum Spear” (page 17, panel 4): Luffy stretches both legs together feet-first into a forward thrust. The fourth named Luffy technique tracked in this vault so far (Pistol, Whip, Rocket, Bazooka — now Spear). Misses Kuro because Kuro warps.
• Luffy’s captain-side duel-claim extends to Usopp: “Laugh at Usopp again… and I’ll kill you.” (page 11). Same duel-defense grammar Luffy used for Zoro in Ch. 17 (“Keep your mitts out of Zolo’s duel!”) — except here Luffy is defending Usopp’s dignity, not Usopp’s duel. Usopp has not yet formally joined the crew. The captain-side claim is a pre-recruitment alignment leak, matching Straw Hat Recruitment Pattern.
• Kuro confirms the Kaya-as-pawn plan explicitly (page 6): “As I said, Kaya was a pawn I needed to further my plan. When she dies, then I’ll say my thanks.” The earlier-arc reveal of Kuro’s plan to murder Kaya for her inheritance is restated and the wait-for-her-to-die clause is fixed as a plan step — Kuro will not act until Kaya dies on her own from his arrangement. This bounds the rest of the arc’s stakes.
• Usopp’s “Captain Usopp” identity solidifies under duress (page 10): paralyzed face-down by hypnosis, with Butchie pinning him, Usopp still declares “I’m a brave warrior of the sea!! I won’t let you lay a finger on the villagers!!! I’m Captain Usopp… and they’re my crew!” The three kids (Onion/Carrot/Pepper) are claimed as his crew on-page. Page 21 confirms the kids accept the captain-role framing: one of them shouts “Usopp’s pirate crew must be prepared!! At a time like this…” — the kids self-identify as Usopp’s crew while their actual captain-figure is paralyzed and being carried off by Zoro.
• Kaya’s illness flares mid-chase (page 21, panel 2): “Hey! No! She’s burning up!!” Kaya’s body cannot sustain the run; she collapses with fever. Frames the rest of the arc’s stakes — the villagers literally cannot run with her.
• Cover-story B-plot: Buggy Pirates post-defeat tour, Part Two: Cabaji on his unicycle is alive and mobile in a wrecked Orange Town street, carrying an unconscious half-naked Mohji over his shoulder; Richie the lion limps bandaged at their side. The crew survived Luffy’s Bazooka and is moving. First on-page evidence in this vault that all named Buggy officers survived the arc; their post-defeat status is being tracked separately from the main story via the cover-story channel.

• Why does Kuro’s plan require waiting for Kaya to die rather than killing her himself? — implied: an inheritance/will-of-the-heir legal mechanism, but not yet on-page.
• How does Django’s hypnosis-buff persist while Django is off-panel? Mechanism unclear; the “super-strong” command was apparently issued before the chase started.
