Chapter 1103: I'm Sorry, Daddy

Summary

Having relived all of Kuma’s memories, Bonney breaks down before the original Vegapunk (Stella), who apologizes that “in the end, I’m nothing more than a hired scientist”; Bonney lays the blame on Saturn (“It’s all… HIM!!!”). A flashback recalls Kuma leaving the 10-year-old Bonney a sun-shaped sapphire necklace as a good-luck charm. In the present, the Egghead siege rages: Marines call it “a bigger siege than Ohara” and gawk that “a brand-new Emperor of the Sea” (Luffy) is holed up on the island, while Dragon and Ivankov track the will-less Kuma, who is “running off of some fragment of his true instincts.” Cornered by Saturn, who tells her “your father, Kuma… is dead,” Bonney transforms into a Nika-like white form via her “Distorted Future” — but weakens as doubt creeps in. Saturn coldly reveals he engineered her: he gave the infant Bonney her power with an extract experiment, ran a chemical experiment on her mother Ginny (the “eighth wife of a fellow in the Holy Land”) that produced the hereditary “Sapphire Scales” blue blemishes, and offered the broken Kuma a “deal.” As the Marines order Bonney shot through the head, a Pacifista whose authority chip no longer works smashes onto the island — Kuma has arrived on Egghead’s southwest shore and snatches his daughter from death. “I’m sorry, Daddy.” “It’s Bartholomew Kuma!!!”

• Saturn gave Bonney her Devil Fruit. “I GAVE you that power, Bonney.” It was “an experiment to see if an infant incapable of eating solid fruit could be given powers with an extract” — successful, “but the fruit itself was worthless” (p. 10).
• The fruit’s nature, stated for the first time: its power “might allow you to transform into any future,” but “the more you know of reality, the narrower your future possibilities become” (p. 10) — Bonney’s Nika-form fades the more she doubts.
• Bonney’s mother = Ginny, the “eighth wife of a fellow in the Holy Land” (a Celestial Dragon). Saturn “performed a chemical experiment on your mother… it was a failure — those blue blemishes showed up again” (p. 11).
• Saturn engineered the “Sapphire Scales.” The hereditary disease that “tore Kuma’s family apart” was Saturn’s experiment; the same effect “was passed down to her daughter” (Bonney) (p. 11).
• Saturn confirms Nika ↔ Gear 5. “Between Nika and Straw Hat’s white-colored form… she doesn’t seem to have made the connection… you don’t know what it is” (p. 9) — the World Government apex knows Luffy’s awakened form is the Sun God Nika.
• Kuma believed the Buccaneer Nika legend. Per Saturn, Kuma said “I want to save people like Nika does”; “your father believed in the idiotic legend of the Buccaneers as well” (p. 10).
• Kuma reaches Egghead. A Pacifista with paw-pads on its hands “just won’t stop — the authority chip isn’t working on him,” proceeding to the island’s center; “Bartholomew Kuma has appeared on the southwest shore of Egghead” (p. 12). He saves Bonney at the cliffhanger.
• Sentomaru captured — “we’ve captured Vegapunk’s bodyguard”; immobilized, unable to move (pp. 6, 13).
• The original Vegapunk calls himself “nothing more than a hired scientist” and says the Straw Hats “saved my life minutes ago” (pp. 3, 5).
