Summary

The conclusion of Kuma’s flashback, framed as his stored memories. Bonney, now a pirate captain, hunts island to island for her father, who has written her off with a letter (“Don’t try to track me down… I can’t meet with you”); her crew lives by the gentle pirate code Kuma instilled. The chapter intercuts the wider world’s turning — Luffy’s first East-Blue bounty, Ace claiming him as his brother, the Warlord summons to Ace’s execution and the coming Whitebeard war — with the moments Kuma’s preserved consciousness witnessed at Thriller Bark (offering to spare the crew for Luffy’s head; letting Zoro take Luffy’s agony) and Sabaody (seeing Bonney one last time through a restaurant window; scattering the Straw Hats to protect Dragon’s son). At Egghead, Vegapunk completes Kuma’s conversion: the WG has ordered a self-destruct switch and the total removal of Kuma’s free will, but Vegapunk secretly engineers a dual-personality neural pathway to leave him “a little willpower.” Kuma’s last requests before the switch is flipped: his first mission be the Marineford war, and his final standing order be to guard the Thousand Sunny until a Straw Hat returns. Vegapunk extracts Kuma’s memories into a paw-bubble “copy” (the deal’s research payment), tells the dying man “You are a hero,” and flips the switch. In the present, that bubble dissolves over a weeping Bonney, delivering Kuma’s last words to her: a wish for “a very happy tenth birthday.”

New reveals

• Kuma guarded the Sunny by his own choice. Before losing his will, Kuma asked Vegapunk to program a final standing order: “I would like to protect their home… until one of the crew returns to it” — to “witness their growth… even though I won’t be around.” This is why the will-less Pacifista guarded the Thousand Sunny through the timeskip (p. 13).
• Vegapunk preserved a sliver of Kuma’s will. The WG, fearing Kuma, ordered a self-destruct switch and that Vegapunk “will not leave him any free will.” Vegapunk invented “a neural pathway that can switch between mental states like dual personalities” and begged “let me retain a little willpower for him” (pp. 11–12). This is the in-world mechanism behind every autonomous act of the “mindless” Kuma.
• The Paw-Paw Fruit can copy/extract memories. Kuma emits a paw-bubble that is “more like a copy… but it will vanish once touched”; emitting it does not erase his own memory (Vegapunk: “that contradiction is proof of your humanity”). Kuma surrenders his life’s memories to Vegapunk as the agreed research “material” (p. 14).
• Kuma bet on Luffy as Nika’s heir. “If there is a hero who will bring a great transformation to this sea… it must be him.” Kuma — “a revolutionary, making a bet on a pirate” — believes Luffy “will be the man… who saves the world,” and instilled the Nika stories into Bonney (pp. 11, 13–14).
• The whole flashback is Kuma’s memory bubble, now reaching Bonney in the present; it closes on her receiving his final message (p. 17).
• Kuma’s last conscious words to Bonney: a wish for “a very happy tenth birthday” — his death framed by Vegapunk as “a nuisance to every person who’s ever known and loved you” (pp. 16–17).
• Kuma and Dragon’s bond: “Both of our children are pirates… what a strange twist of fate, Dragon” (p. 4).
