Chapter 1101: To Bonney

Summary

A Kuma flashback chapter. In a present-day Egghead frame, Saturn taunts the captive Kuma, recounting that three years ago Kuma was observed traveling to Goa Kingdom and secretly watching a “particular young lad” — teenage Luffy (age 16) training his Gum-Gum Axe at Mt. Corvo — and warns that “children are a vulnerability for any parent.” The chapter then plunges into the full Kuma–Bonney backstory: Kuma sailed the world as a kind-hearted pirate captain (bear-paw jolly roger, “KUMA” sail), helping merchants and sparing surrendering pirates, all while writing dozens of loving letters home to his daughter Bonney. In Sorbet Kingdom, little Bonney is raised by Queen Dowager Conney and kept indoors her whole life by a crystal-”stone” illness that occasionally makes her body balloon to giant size; the illness is medicated and her powers kept secret. At the Navy Science Division, Laboratory 8, Vegapunk converts Kuma into a Pacifista — a process that erases free will, memory and emotion — but grants Kuma roughly one more year of minimal consciousness so he can keep writing “an entire life’s worth of emotions” to Bonney. The letters eventually stop; Kuma resurfaces as a silent Revolutionary at Baltigo, his silence defended by Dragon. Conney reveals Bonney’s disease is fully cured, that her caretakers (“Alpha and her ilk”) are secret government agents holding her past her cure, and arranges Bonney’s escape aboard the legendary fisher Gyogyo’s crew to go find Kuma. As Bonney finally steps outside for the first time and sets sail, the agent Alpha attacks with Rokushiki; recalling her father’s Nika stories, Bonney transforms — “Distorted Future / Nika-Like Future” — and the fishing boat becomes a pirate ship “much like Luffy’s.”

New reveals

• Kuma watched young Luffy. Three years before Sabaody, Kuma traveled to Goa Kingdom and secretly observed 16-year-old Luffy training his “Gum-Gum Axe”; Luffy’s instincts made him “shiver” and sense a watcher (p.3–5). Saturn now weaponizes this knowledge against Kuma.
• Kuma the pirate captain. Before the Revolutionary Army, Kuma sailed as a benevolent pirate (ship bears a bear-paw jolly roger and “KUMA” sail), stopping pillagers and sparing those who surrendered, while writing letters home (p.6).
• Bonney’s childhood. Raised in Sorbet Kingdom in/around the church by Queen Dowager Conney; kept indoors her entire life by a crystal-”stone” disease that intermittently makes her body grow giant (p.7–9). Her powers were deliberately hidden (“a wise hawk hides its talons”).
• Pacifista conversion mechanics. At the Navy Science Division Laboratory 8, Vegapunk explains that losing one’s free will in the project means losing “all of the memories and human emotions” gained in life; he guarantees Kuma a bare minimum of consciousness “right up to just before the end” — about one more year (p.10).
• The letters stop; Kuma goes Revolutionary. After ~a year, no letters reach Bonney; Kuma is seen rescuing the Revolutionary Army at Baltigo, his silence defended by Dragon (“I’m sure he has his reasons. Ones he can’t tell us…”) (p.12–13).
• Bonney’s captivity and escape. Cured but still imprisoned until her tenth birthday (half a year past her cure) by secret government agents; Conney frees her via the legendary ruffian fisher Gyogyo and crew to “go to sea and find your father” (p.13–15).
• Bonney’s power named. Confronted by the agent Alpha (Rokushiki), Bonney recalls her father’s tales of Nika and transforms — “Distorted Future!!” → “Nika-Like Future!!” — into a white Nika-shaped form, while the fishing boat morphs into a New-World pirate ship “much like Luffy’s” (p.16–17).
