Firsts
  • The Usopp–Luffy duel (declared Ch. 331) is fought and decided in full: Usopp loses; Luffy wins and the Going Merry is awarded to Usopp
  • Usopp's Dial arsenal is a duel-grade weapon kit: he uses Triple Exploding Stars, Blasting Cactus Stars, and an Impact Dial against Luffy; Luffy counters by absorbing a Gum-Gum Bazooka with a Dial of his own ('I just absorbed the force of your attack... It's a Dial')
  • Luffy finishes the duel with Gum-Gum Bullet; Zoro calls the fight over
  • Luffy formally cedes the Going Merry to Usopp: '...with the Merry Go. Do what you want...' — then declares the crew will 'find a new ship... and keep sailing forward'
  • Usopp re-invokes his old self-myth mid-fight ('I am the notorious Captain Usopp! Feared pirate, and ruler of this village!!!'), tying the duel back to his Usopp-Pirates origin
  • Sanji enforces a no-pity doctrine: he stops Chopper from tending the beaten Usopp — 'He lost his challenge. The last thing he needs now is your pity. He made the challenge knowing what the outcome could be. [Pity] just hurts the vanquished even more'
  • Zoro articulates the captain-burden doctrine to a grief-stricken Luffy: 'That's the burden... of being a captain. Don't doubt yourself. Who can we have faith in if YOU start becoming unsure...' — and resolves 'Let's leave the ship to him'
  • The crew abandons the Going Merry to Usopp, leaving Chopper's medical bag behind for him; 'This is it for us... We can never... return to this ship'

Summary

The Usopp–Luffy duel declared on the Ch. 331 cliffhanger is fought to its end on the canal flats of Water Seven, in sight of the moored Going Merry. Usopp throws his full sniper-and-Dial arsenal at his captain — Triple Exploding Stars, Blasting Cactus Stars, and an Impact Dial punch — invoking his old self-myth mid-battle (“I am the notorious Captain Usopp! Feared pirate, and ruler of this village!!!”). Luffy weathers it: he absorbs Usopp’s Gum-Gum Bazooka with a Dial of his own (“I just absorbed the force of your attack… It’s a Dial”) and ends the fight with Gum-Gum Bullet (a single point-blank pistol strike). Usopp goes down (THUD!!!); Zoro declares “The fight is over.” Beaten in the dust, Usopp can’t believe it (“…you could defeat me!! There’s no way…”). Luffy, fighting back tears, stands over the wreck and gives Usopp what he challenged for — the Going Merry: “…with the Merry Go. Do what you want…” — then turns to the rest of the crew and declares they’ll “find a new ship… and keep sailing forward!!” (a wordless memory-montage of voyages with Usopp floods the panels: Elbaf, the workshop, “It’s my special seat!!,” “So long, Usopp…”). Chopper breaks down and tries to run to tend the bleeding Usopp; Sanji physically blocks him and lays down the duel’s hardest law — “This wasn’t just any old fight. He lost his challenge. The last thing he needs now is your pity. …He made the challenge knowing what the outcome could be… Excessive kindness just hurts the vanquished even more!” Luffy, crushed, sobs “This is too much…!” Zoro answers him with the captain-doctrine: “That’s the burden… of being a captain. Don’t doubt yourself. Who can we have faith in if YOU start becoming unsure…?” The crew makes its choice — “Let’s leave the ship to him” — and walks away from the Going Merry for what they believe is the last time, leaving Chopper’s medical bag behind on the flats for the man they’ve left aboard. “This is it for us… We can never… return to this ship.” Luffy and Chopper weep as the Merry recedes.
