Aggregate note for chapter cover-pages that are standalone vignettes — not part of any continuing cover-story B-plot arc. Includes the early Volume 2 Nami-with-animals motif (Ch. 10, 15), Luffy-with-animal-companion gags (Ch. 11, 19, 21), chapter-title splashes that double as scene-setters, saga-transition splashes, and recurring fan-art / pirate-gallery slots when no serialized cover-arc is running.
Per-chapter log
Volume 2 — Nami-with-animals + Luffy-with-apex-predator motif
- Ch. 10 — Nami in desert with pig (Vol. 2 animal-motif start).
- Ch. 11 — Luffy/cheetah savanna (formalizes cover-as-imaginary-vignette pattern after Nami’s pig cover).
- Ch. 15 — Nami riding mammoth, with Luffy as cargo. First three-Straw-Hat composition shot.
- Ch. 19 — Luffy in straw hat + Anchor shirt feeding a giant hippopotamus, sitting on a “DANGER”-stenciled crate over a stone bridge. Visual rhyme with Buggy Balls crates.
- Ch. 21 — Luffy beach-picnic with sleeping tiger. Luffy-treats-apex-predators-as-company — recurring Oda motif (cf. later Nika-iconography panels).
Standalone / mood-piece splashes
- Ch. 32 — Chinese-themed splash: elegant woman in cheongsam with Luffy upside-down in her lap, small boy with club, Chinese horned dragon in background. Mood-piece.
- Ch. 38 — Picnic with goat: Luffy + Nami + Usopp + small companion. Post-recruitment group composition staged three chapters before Usopp formally joins.
- Ch. 44 — Chapter-title splash: crew + watermelons. Low-stakes domestic vignette (cover-story slot empty this chapter).
- Ch. 64 — Sanji at sushi-counter prepping a giant fish, Luffy and crocodile customer at the counter. Chef-not-warrior doctrinal-tell.
- Ch. 69 — Christmas splash: Luffy + Sanji in Santa suits on a sleigh pulled by a reindeer with antlers and a Santa hat — long-burn Chopper-silhouette pre-load (Chopper debuts Ch. 134).
- Ch. 76 — Sleep tableau with owls + Sanji at base of tree.
- Ch. 82 — Six-panel grid showing Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, Nami, Usopp in STAND BY / STAND THE PAIN / STAND UP postures. Chapter’s arc-pivot stand-up beat.
- Ch. 107 — Moonlight and Tombstones funky-themed character-tableau. Marks the East-Blue-saga closure, Alabasta-saga opening — cover-story slot paused for saga-transition. Structurally analogous to Ch. 1 Romance Dawn title splash and Ch. 100 East-Blue-crew celebration spread.
- Ch. 120 — Luffy + Nami in Arabian/desert wardrobe on a camel. First Alabasta-wardrobe cover-tease.
- Ch. 144 — Vivi in Alabasta princess wardrobe — jeweled chest-piece, henna-tattooed hands and face, princess-gown with veil. Art-level Alabasta-arrival pre-install.
- Ch. 147 — A caballo vamo’ pa’l mar! (Spanish: On horseback, we go to the sea!) — Kureha + recovered Nami + Sanji bounding across a grassy plain. NOT a Django-cover installment per chapter prose; this is an in-chapter title-splash logo.
- Ch. 174 — Nico Robin reclining in a bath surrounded by snow monkeys / yeti (onsen scene), holding a sake bottle. First on-page Robin-centered cover splash. Character-spotlight one-shot pattern that has interrupted the Django serial.
- Ch. 176 — Solo Mr. 4 in pastoral-shepherd composition with sheep/goats and a dog-like wagging creature. Chapter-cover, not a multi-volume serial.
- Ch. 179 — Karoo (?) atop falcon Pell. Composition is ambiguous (is Karoo riding Pell, or is Pell carrying the helmet as a prop?).
- Ch. 181 — Sanji in a 59-numbered black football-style jersey, playing cards with a large dark furry bear-creature wearing a HITODE (starfish) shirt, on a desert-crossroads bench. Quiz / card-game setup that pre-figures the chapter’s which-card-is-the-real-Vivi tactical engine.
Notes
- One-shot splashes are typically deployed in chapters where: (a) no serialized cover-arc is running, (b) a saga transition is happening, or (c) Oda wants to use the title-page slot for a scene-setting / mood composition rather than a B-plot.
- The Volume 2 animal-companion theme (Ch. 10-21) is the seed of the Strawhats-with-fauna visual register that recurs across many later cover-arts. 69 reindeer-Santa-hat splash is the earliest paratext pre-load of a recruit (Chopper, ~65 chapters before his debut). May be a category-of-pre-loads worth tracking.
