Chapter 174: Mr. Prince

Summary

Cover splash (p. 1): a Robin-centered onsen / bathhouse one-shot — Nico Robin reclining among snow monkeys and yeti tending to her with sake (NOT a continuation of the Django serial).

In-story: picks up immediately after Ch. 0173. Sanji, inside Rain Dinners holding Mr. 3’s commandeered Snail-o-phone, calls Crocodile back as Restaurant Le Crap (p. 2). Crocodile recognizes the prior-deception-signature: “Stop fooling around, you idiot. … Hello, this is Restaurant Le Crap.” / “I’m glad to hear that.” / “Then you remember.” Crocodile articulates the operational problem aloud: “I thought I had all the Straw Hat Pirates in that cage!! Are there more?!” (p. 2). Sanji introduces himself with a new alias — …Mr. Prince (p. 3) — the first on-page utterance of the Sanji-Mr. Prince codename. Crocodile, narrowed: ”…!” / “Where are you right now, Mr. Prince?”. Sanji refuses: “I can’t tell you that. If I did, you’d come and kill me.” — “Well, whether you can kill me or not is debatable, but I’m not fool enough… to give out information for free — unlike you, Mr. Zero.” (pp. 4-5).

In the cage, Vivi holds the Snail-o-phone for the captives (Luffy, Usopp, Igaram); they yell into it: “We’ve been captured!!! There’s not much time!!!” / “PRINCE! SAVE US!!!” (p. 4). Crocodile blasts the cage-mates back with a sand-strike (BLAM!!! UGH!!! THUD..!!, p. 5) and demands: “Tell me. Where are you?” Sanji feigns shock — “No… Sanji?!” — playing both alias and real-name simultaneously. Crocodile articulates the death-clock (p. 11): “Soon the water will cover the Bananagators’ feeding area and flood this room. If you care about your friends so much, you should die here with them. If you don’t mind a corpse!! Ha ha!!! I’ll even bring that smart aleck Mr. Prince here too…” Sanji ends the call (BEEP BEEP, p. 6).

Robin: “The Millions still don’t know what you look like. Are you sure?” Crocodile dons a hooded cloak: “I’ll arouse no suspicion if I show up as Crocodile… to investigate a commotion in front of my own casino. I’m not going there as the boss. Only the numbered agents know our faces.” (p. 6) — first on-page Crocodile-disguise + first on-page boss-tier compartment-security articulation (only Officer Agents know the boss’s face).

Crocodile attacks the cage room with a sand-tornado/quake (pp. 7-10, FWRR!! / CHOOMP!! / KSHHHH!!!) that shatters the glass separating the cage area from the Bananagator aquarium. Vivi was the only one outside the cage and escapes through a window (“There’s still time before the water floods this room. I’m going to find help!!” / “And Chopper’s out there too. Maybe there’s still hope.” p. 8). The cage-mates watch the Bananagators (a herd of them — DOOM!!! GRAAARR!! KRUNCH AAAAH!!!) breach the glass (pp. 13-14) and flood the cage area: “The glass broke!! The water’s rushing in!!! This room will be underwater in less than 20 minutes!!!” (p. 15). Vivi yells to them from a window: “You guys!!! Is Vivi all right?!” Sanji: “I’ll come back with help!!! I won’t abandon you!!! Hang on just a little longer!!!” (p. 15).

Cut to Rainbase city (pp. 12-19): a hooded Crocodile walks through the city; citizens recognize his face — “S-Sir Crocodile!!” / “It IS him!! In person!! Our hero!” / “He rarely shows his face in the casino!!” / “They really love you.” (pp. 12-13). First on-page operational deployment of the Guardian Deity of Alabasta cover at the citizen-mob register. Civic gossip: “The final clash between the king and the rebels is finally coming. The city is in an uproar!!” / “H-have you heard what happened at Nanohana?!” — the Nanohana rebellion-trigger is now on-page reported. Crocodile, masked-villain register: “This is the king that wouldn’t do anything when pirates attacked our towns… I was always afraid it would come to this.” (p. 12).

Tony Tony Chopper in Heavy Point at the Rain Dinners entrance smashes things to provoke Crocodile (p. 7); the commotion is bait. Crocodile spots him: “That must be him!!” / “GROOOOO…” / “You little peon… Don’t think that you can get away from me!” — Chopper sprints (HUFF… HUFF…, p. 17). Crocodile, in cloak-and-hood, unleashes the chase: “…and lives!! No one makes a fool of me…” — FWOOM!!! — followed by THOOM!!! on the bridge (p. 18). Crowd: “An earthquake?!” / “But why?!” / “RRMMM MMB… KWOOSH…” / “Oh, no!! The bridge collapsed!!!”. Citizens (and Crocodile) trapped on Rainbase island (p. 18): “What’s going on?!” / “Isn’t there a boat?!” / “We’re trapped here!!”

Robin, in the dining hall on her own, narrates the design (p. 19): “Now Baroque Works can’t get in either. Maybe we can’t get out, but…”. Sanji, smoking, from the doorway: “We have to hurry. The rebellion’s begun. Chopper’s leading Crocodile on a wild goose chase.” Robin (in a Snail-o-phone-headset frame): “All according to plan.” Vivi runs across the rooftop (KLAK!! KLAK!!) yelling for Sanji (“SANJI!!!”); Sanji, full-page close-up (p. 19), cigarette mid-smile: “So, show me the way… princess.” (chapter-closing cliffhanger).

New reveals

• Mr. Prince alias debuts on-page (pp. 3-5, 16, 19). First on-page utterance — ”…Mr. Prince.” — operationalized as Sanji’s Baroque-Works-deception codename. Cashes the Ch. 0168 Just call me Prince Charming! self-naming.
• Sanji’s direct Snail-o-phone deception against Crocodile (pp. 2-6). The Ch. 0126-0127 impersonation cycle is now a recognized signature by Crocodile, who immediately reads Restaurant Le Crap as the deception-trigger. The deception still works — Sanji refuses location disclosure and ends the call.
• First on-page Crocodile disguise (p. 6, pp. 12-13, 17-18) — hooded cloak. Tied to the compartment-security doctrine (only Officer Agents know the boss’s face; the Millions do not).
• Bananagator-flooding death-trap mechanic articulated (p. 11, p. 15). The Rain Dinners cage is positioned at the Bananagators’ feeding area and floods on a timer. Less than 20 minutes countdown set.
• Crocodile severs the Rainbase bridge (pp. 17-18). Sand-attack collapses the only land connection out of Rainbase. Citizens trapped. “The bridge collapsed!!!” First on-page Crocodile-tier civilian-infrastructure attack.
• Operation Utopia is live-fire — Nanohana attack reported (pp. 12, 17-19). The civilian-tier rumor confirms the rebellion has been triggered at Nanohana. Sanji: “The rebellion’s begun.”
• Chopper as engineered decoy (pp. 7, 17-19) — Heavy Point at the Rain Dinners front gate as bait. Chopper’s leading Crocodile on a wild goose chase. First on-page Strawhat-coordinated-decoy-and-extract tactic.
• Crocodile as civilian-folk-hero — operational live-cover (pp. 12-13). The Ch. 0155 Guardian Deity of Alabasta cover is operationalized at the citizen-mob register: “It IS him!! In person!! Our hero!” Crocodile articulates the anti-Cobra blame-doctrine to the crowd in-character.
• Vivi as extraction-agent inversion (pp. 8, 15). The princess-needs-rescue dynamic flips — Vivi is the only one outside the cage, and she runs to find help while the Strawhats sit in a flooding room.
• All according to plan (p. 19). The chapter reveals the Strawhats had an off-page coordinated plan to lure Crocodile out of Rain Dinners (Chopper bait + Sanji impersonation + bridge-side-extraction). The Ch. 0170-0173 cage-capture is reframed as partially engineered.
• Robin in the dining hall coordinating with Sanji via Snail-o-phone (p. 19). The first on-page Robin-with-Strawhat-coordination-tone beat — Robin still presents as Baroque Works but is operationally treating Sanji as an ally (“All according to plan.”). Pre-loads the forward-canon Robin-defects-to-Strawhats reveal.

Foreshadowing seeds planted

• What’s the rest of the plan? Robin’s all according to plan (p. 19) names a coordinated multi-Strawhat operation. The chapter shows pieces (Sanji’s deception + Chopper’s bait + Vivi’s extraction) but not the full design. Forward-canon: Smoker-cell rescue + Crocodile-vs-Luffy duel + Vivi-to-Alubarna route.
• When did Robin defect / who is she actually working for? Robin’s all according to plan line is coordinated-team-grammar with Sanji, not adversarial-grammar. This is the first on-page Robin-tilts-toward-Strawhats beat. Is Robin running a separate operation, working with the Strawhats, or doing both?
• How did Sanji get out of the cage to make the call? The chapter opens with Sanji already free with the Snail-o-phone. (Forward-canon: Ch. 0173 cliffhanger / Mr. 2 face-impression mishap likely accounts for this.)
• Why does Crocodile know the Restaurant Le Crap signature? Crocodile’s instant recognition of Restaurant Le Crap as a Sanji-deception-tell (vs. a misdial) on p. 2 means he’s traced the deception back to Sanji specifically — when and how is unclear.
• What’s happening at Nanohana? The chapter only reports — “H-have you heard what happened at Nanohana?!” (p. 12) — but doesn’t show. Forward-canon: Mr. 2 Bon Clay impersonating King Cobra to trigger citizen-rebellion against the crown.
• What’s the actual mechanism of Crocodile’s sand-quake attack? Pp. 17-18 FWOOM!!! / THOOM!!! / bridge-collapse is a larger-scale Suna Suna deployment than previously shown — sand-tornado / desertification-quake mode. Forward-canon: Sables / Desert Spada / Ground Death named-attacks.
• Are the Bananagators going to eat the cage-mates? The cage is flooding; the Bananagators have breached. 20-minute clock running.
• What’s Zoro doing? Off-frame for this chapter. (Forward-canon: Smoker-rescue / Tashigi-encounter / sword-mistake-set-piece is forward-canon.)
• Is the Mr. Prince alias a one-off or sustained? The forward-canon answer is sustained — Sanji uses the alias through the Rain Dinners arc and beyond.
